Theatre/Vintage Theamed Wedding

So me and my fiance' are getting married at local stage theatre. We met in the drama department of our high school, so the theatre and the stage holds a special place in our hearts. But...I'm a girly girl as well and love VINTAGE. I have some ideas; playbill and tickets but other then that I'm stuck. I have no idea how to tie in these two without it looking weird...any help?
P.S. When I say theatre I mean like broadway theatre, not hollywood.
Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea, maybe just google image broadway theater or theater from the earlier part of the centry and it will give you some ideas to start from?

  • I think it sounds great :) is there a particular vintage play maybe you could pull some ideas from?

Your wedding sounds amazing! Is there a particular play or musical that you two are particularly fond of to help draw more specific style ideas? If not, maybe some of these more generic ones could be useful:

Playbills can be used for the programs or centerpiece ideas. Depending how you want to go with table names, (you could name them after a different musical or play), the Playbills could match what they are named after or be made up theater titles with pictures of the two of you. You mentioned you two met during theater so you could even combine it and use real play names but use photos of the two of you from that play.

The ticket shape could be used on anything from Save the Dates, RSVP cards, escort cards, etc.

Colors can go however you want but here's what comes to my mind when I hear vintage and theater.
Theater colors: reds (stage curtains, red carpet), golds (the bright lights, a lot of theaters seem to be yellow/golden on the inside), black (when the show starts, black-tie atmosphere on opening night, fancy suits); elegant, opening night atmosphere, formal but not stuffy with a sense of excitement in the air
Vintage colors: creams/ivory, blush pink, white, pale yellow, pale blue (ivory dresses with blue sashes); clean, soft color palette that makes it feel airy, and a sort of refined casual atmosphere

Tables could be named after either different plays you've either worked as a part, famous plays and musicals people will recognize, famous plays or musicals about love, or whatever happens to be your personal favorites.

Centerpieces could be anything from flowers, lace, Playbills, candles, framed photos of the two of you participating in the plays or musicals, or if the tables are named after a specific musical or play then something referencing it.

When I hear vintage I tend to think of the 1920's with the roaring night life and people dressed to the nines; definitely the musical Chicago. You could go with a "Opening Night at the Theater" theme, and have your bridesmaids in long gowns or even shorter "flapper" inspired dresses with the long gloves; other options could be beaded or feathered headbands, and long strings of pearls wrapped around as well. You don't want it being too fancy cause then it risks feeling like a "Night at the Opera" and I think the theater atmosphere lets you be a little more whimsical and fun. Opera is serious business.

ETA: Sorry, I know my post was long enough but if none of those other ideas fit your personality and are open to a slightly more offbeat idea, what about going with The Muppet Show since it took place in an old theater. You could use the lyrics of the show for either save the date, invitation, or program wording:

"It's time to play the music
It's time to light the lights
t's time to meet the couple at the Smith wedding tonight.

It's time to put on makeup
It's time to dress up right
It's time to raise the curtain on the Smith wedding tonight."

You can also get from FAO Schwarz your very own muppet but they are a bit pricey at $100. You get to pick the body, hair, eyes, and clothing, however, the options are somewhat limited.
