Wedding Dress Shopping!

My mom and my 4 bridesmaids are all coming to Atlanta this weekend to go wedding dress shopping with me.

We have 3 appointments set up for Saturday, and 2 appointments set for Sunday.

Any words of advice?

Re: Wedding Dress Shopping!

  • Try on dresses that you wouldn't think you'd like. The dress I ended up getting hate how looks online but love how looks on me! The ones loved online didn't look that great on me. Keep an open mind!
  • That's awesome and exciting! My best advice is don't limit what you try on! What you think you want, may not end up looking best on you, and what you thought you would never try on, may end up looking great! I always thought I would have a poofier A line ball gown type dress, and ended up getting a "mermaid" (i think it's more just dropped waist...) dress that looks great on me! :) Have fun!

  • I'd print out pictures of the dresses you like/want to try on to show to the consultants. It'll make their job a lot easier and they'll be able to make more suggestions for you :-)

  • And do NOT compromise what makes you feel beautiful and happy just to satisfy others (if they make comments saying they dont like a dress you love).! This is YOUR day! :D

  • Do not try on dresses that are out of your budget. My sister kept trying to get me to try on a dress that was $600 more than what my mom said she wanted to spend on a dress. I loved the dress on the hanger but refused to try it on because I didn't want to fall in love with it and then be SOL. lol

  • Keep an open mind... Be willing to try on lots of different styles initially until you start getting a feel of what you like and what looks good... Don't just go with what you *think* will look good or what you *think* you want.

You have a lot of appointments jam packed into 1 weekend, so try not to get overwhelmed. When I first started my search, I had 2 appts on Saturday and 1 on Sunday... The experience was very different at each place. On Saturday, I went to 2 local boutiques. The consultant selected the dresses for me after I described what I thought I might be looking for. I got a very personalized experience, but didn't have much control over what I got to try on. At the 1st boutique, I felt like she wasn't really listening to me... At the 2nd boutique, she was amazing and pulled several dresses that were spot on. On Sunday, I went to the David's Bridal in the area, and the experience was totally different. My mother, sister, and FMIL were with me, and the consultant basically sent all of us to the racks... so all 4 of us split up and were looking through all the racks... everyone pulling dresses left and right. I got completely overwhelmed.

So I'd say to remember to breathe as well... And let your voice be heard. It's your appointment... and as helpful as your mom and BMs may try to be, it may be difficult to keep control of the appt.

    Most of all: HAVE FUN!!!

  • I don't know about any of the other girls, I didn't cry though and I know someone who said she won't be a dress until she gets her crying moment. If you feel beautiful and imagine yourself walking down the aisle in it, it's your dress :)

  • I agree with everything PPs said! Definitely don't try on outside of your budget! Also, I kind of had an idea of what I wanted, I knew I didn't want a poofy princess-like dress, so I avoided those except 1 that I tried on and then remembered why I don't like those dresses. Just remember that you are the one getting married and wearing the dress. When you find the right one, you will fall in love with it.

  • Definitely try on dresses that you don't think you'll like. They'll surprise you sometimes.

Also, I don't know if I'm the only one on earth that felt this way, but every time I went to a shop, I felt like I HAD to find my dress. I felt like otherwise, I had wasted everyone's time. So literally, at each appointment I thought I found "the one". And then the next day or a couple days later I'd realize that I hadn't. Now that all is said and done, I know how silly that is. So, my advice to you, I guess, is just don't think/feel that way hahaha

  • Don't be discouraged by the way the dress looks on the hanger.! Dresses that look hideous on hanger end up being gorgeous on you. Don't overwhelm yourself, and DON"T SETTLE. Its easily the mst important dress you will wear in your lifetime, so make sure its the right one!

  • I want to second (or third? fourth?) the suggestion to try on dresses you don't think are your style/don't think you'd like. I tried on probably 50 dresses all in the same style and 1 in a completely different style. Guess which dress was the one? Yep. And I distinctly remember saying to the consultant that I didn't want a dress like that, lol.

Also, if you're coming into the store with pictures of the dresses you want to try, I would, after trying those on, say to your consultant, "Now that you know what I like and don't like, is there anything else you think I should try on?" It helped me feel like I was thorough in my search at every store.

  • Agreed with all PP!
Do bring some pics of what you like and/or have an idea of what you like - it helps you get started. When I was first shopping, I was very vague about what I wanted in a dress. When you know what you like and dont like &what looks/makes you feel good, it definitely helps get the ball rolling.
And try on things you might not expect yourself to like - those dresses may surprise you.

    Happy dress hunting!

  • If the shop lets you take pics, have someone take pics of you so you can go back and look later if you don't make a decision while you're there.

I agree w/ rdr about feeling like I HAD to find a dress at the first shop I went to. I literally felt guilty for a week b/c they had been so nice. But I convinced myself that their business will survive w/o me :)

    Hace fun!

  • I had a minor freak out before going to my 2nd appointment (at a different store).  I was going there because I found a dress online I loved and had to try on (the first store didn't have it).  I was freaking out because I was thinking "how am I going to know that this is the one"? Well, I ended up loving the dress and I knew it was the one when I teared up (didn't cry) and didn't want to take it off! :)
