DJ verses Band?

I am having a hard time trying to figure out whether I should go with a band or a DJ. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for either of the two.

Thanks!

we went with a dj and absolutely loved him.  djs are typically a boat load cheaper than bands.  we used jason wallace at absolute entertainment.  they're a whole company so if you don't like jason, they have others to choose from.  he was fantastic to work with and kept the dance floor packed all night.  i've been to 3 weddings that he's done and everyone raves about him.

my sister had a band and they were great too.  but like PP said, you're listening to covers all night long.  it's not bad but just different.  also, bands usually have their niche that they play.  most can't go from (for example) michael jackson to garth brooks to justin timberlake to van morrison.  i know, that was totally random, but you can't have those options with a band.  that was the main reason we went with a dj.

IMO a really good cover band would be AWESOME... but if they're not that good, then I'd rather go with the DJ. Like PP said, bands are more expensive, so I'd recommend a top-notch DJ over a cheapy band that won't get the songs right. It really depends on your budget I think.
