how to address the following.....

A couple who is still legally married, but no longer "together", and she kept her maiden name. Is she refered to as a Ms. or a Mrs.?

Someone who is legally divorced, yet kept her ex-husbands last name....Ms. or Mrs.?

Re: how to address the following.....

  • In the first case, she is (and was throughout her marriage) Ms.

In the second case, you'll need to ask her.
  • I thought there was Miss, Ms and Mrs. I would ask her what she prefers to be called and use Ms as the fallback if you can't find out. Ms can be used when it is not certain whether the woman is married or not.

A woman who does not take her husband's last name is Ms. Jane Doe during marriage and while separated and when divorced.

A divorced woman uses her first name:  Ms. Jane Doe.
  • If a woman changes her name when she is married, she is Mrs. Married Name. If she does not change her name, she is Ms. Maiden Name. If she gets divorced and never changed her name in the first place, she is still Ms. Maiden Name.

The only thing that confuses me is when a woman is a widow. My grandmother-in-law was recently widowed and she now considers herself Ms. Married Name instead of Mrs. Married Name. I hope to never be in that situation, but if I were, I think I would still refer to myself as Mrs. Married Name (especially if I was elderly).
