Wedding Day Makeup Poll

Hi everyone :)

I would like some advice from all of you. First let me give you some background wedding. My fiance and I will be getting married June of 2013 and we are doing a 1940's theme (big band and all!) Colors are going to be black, white and pewter (dark, metallic gray) and I'm kinda going for the old hollywood glamour look (for myself at least).

There are two routes I could go for makeup--one being the more dramatic smoky eye of the 40's with the nude lip color OR the more natural eye with the bright red lip. I really am torn. So thats why I'm doing this poll!

Thank you for your input! Feel free to comment as well.

  • When I think 1940's, I always picture the bright red lip. If it were me, I'd do that, paired with some winged black liquid liner. That's just me, though...
  • Well if your little caricature looks anything like you, I think you'd look really pretty with the bright red lip.

But not everybody looks good in such a bright color (myself included) and I'd rather have my make-up look awesome on me than "fit" with the theme, kwim?

  • Have you had a makeup trial done with both looks? Although the red lip may be more stereotypical 1940s, that may not be what looks best on you. I'd try both looks out first and then make your decision from that.

Like the PP said, it is better to have makeup that makes you look like a million bucks than to fit a theme.

Completely agree! Try out both looks and play around with it. I did my own makeup and did tons of different looks before finding which would work best for me. I'd put them both on, take pictures, and see which is most flattering. Maybe neither will work and a combo of both could be your best option, who knows.

  • I'd maybe go with a toned down version of one or the other...I know at least for myself, I'm very fair, and while red lipstick looks good on me in person, in photos, it tends to wash me out a lot (especially with a flash). I think it was in one of the most recent issues of Entertainment Weekly they had a picture of Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe for her new movie, and they interviewed the lead makeup artist...the makeup artist said that she purposely toned down the smoky eye and the bright lipstick because the muted version still gave the impression of Marilyn Monroe's iconic look, without being completely overpowering. That makes me think of what you're dealing with here...a trial run would probably give you the best idea of what will work. Good luck!!
  • Lots of good suggestions! My mother is a makeup artist (lucky me right?) Maybe she and I will have to play around with the looks.

    Thanks for your advice everyone!

  • Try both and see which one you think looks better on. You may find that while both sound good when you are describing them, one may look better than the other when it is actually on.
  • I voted red lipstick, but I agree with PPs. Test them out and even take some pictures to see what does best. Although, I think brides with red lipstick look fabulous! =)

  • Check out this link.  You don't have to do red if you don't find it flattering.  You can also do a dark pink to and still get that retro vibe.  However, there are so many shades of red, that it's pretty easy to find one that will work for all skin tones.

Full disclosure, I wore red lipstick.  Although I don't usually do a bold lip in my everyday life, I think wearing red lipstick on my wedding day was one of the best decisions that I made (makeup wise).  It really showed up in photos and gave a retro feel.  I also think that red looks great in black and white photos.
  • Since you had decided the 1940's theme, why not follow through 100%.  I like to see your photo with the dramatic smoky eye and nude lip.
  • For the 1940's I picture more red lips than anything else, so that is what I voted for :)

  • I think that you should try both and see which one you like better.  I vote for the smoky eye and natural lip color, though.  I think that would look prettier.  I'm not a fan of the bright red lipstick, but I know that a lot of girls are.  I know that you will look amazing no matter which look you choose!
  • I think of red lips

  • you should defiantly try both looks out and decide which one looks good on YOURSELF. but I think of red lips when I hear 40's too.
