I am a 40 Act specialist but am currently handlng compliance matters.  I would like to limit liability and go back to straight 40 Act work though.  I hve been practicing for 16 years.  No kids for me.  I went to law school since I liked the challenge and thought I would enjoy the practice.  I did for a lot of years.
  • What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice? I'm an environmental lawyer

Do you wish you were doing something different?  Sometimes I dream of opening a catering business with my mom, but I love my job.

How long have you been practicing law? Almost 3 years

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? I'm so torn on this, I guess it will depend on our financial situation, but ideally I'd like to stay home to raise kids while they're young, and go back to work when they're in school.

why did you go to law school in the first place? I wanted to be an environmental lawyer since I was in high school.  It feels pretty awesome to have followed my dream, and that its working out so well.

  • I don't practice.  I'm in law school admissions, and I love it.  I really want to stay in the law school administration field--my degree is relevant, but it's a lot lower stress than practicing.

If I did practice, I'd want to go back to working with victims of domestic violence.  It's sad, but very rewarding and interesting.

I'm coming up on one year of bar admission.

I would like to SAH for awhile when we have kids.  We'd like to have 2-3 close together.  This depends on DH's long-term salary--he's clerking now so it will be changing in the next few years.

I worked in a law firm in college and loved it.

  • What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice?  I'm a healthcare attorney

Do you wish you were doing something different?  I wish I was using my MPH and doing public health work...which pays nothing.

How long have you been practicing law?  7 years

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working?  Nope, I'm the breadwinner in our family.

why did you go to law school in the first place?  I wish I knew.  I felt like since I'd decided not to go to med school that I needed another path in life.  I wish I'd taken a year in between college and law school.
  • I'm going to be a lawyer in a year - can I play?

What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice? Wills and Estates

How long have you been practicing law? Since this summer :) I'm going into my 3rd year of LS
If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? No
why did you go to law school in the first place? I've always loved law - since high school. Sounds like a cliche, but it's true. I also love that a law degree can allow me to do anything I want within the profession - lots of flexibility and freedom

I don't want kids. Which is funny as I'm in family law, but whatever.

  • In Response to poll for the lawyers on the board:
I lurk - a lot...but I thought I would come out of hiding on this one!

What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice?
I'm a prosecutor so I mainly do criminal work although there is a family law aspect to my job.

Do you wish you were doing something different? Dear God Yes!! Actually, Brie, you have my dream job. I worked in admissions before law school and now I wish I could get back into that field.

How long have you been practicing law?Just about 2.5 years

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? If I stayed at my current job, I would probably keep working. The hours are really decent and my boss is very flexible about family issues.

why did you go to law school in the first place? I honestly, truly have no idea. I knew I wanted an advanced degree and somehow law school got my vote. I don't know that I would make the same choice again though...

  • Here are my sister's answers (that I know of)
What do you practice: She does commercial real estate for a major national firm. One of her current projects is working on the Freedom Towers ( where the Trade Towers used to stand).

How long have you practiced: I believe she has been in the field for a little over 10 years but I could be wrong.

Do you wish you were doing things different: A lot of times she does wish she did something different. With her last promotion she's accomplished all of her professional goals (her words) and doesn't really feel she has anywhere to go in her field. But she also has so much invested she can't leave with good conscience. The hours and demands are also getting to her in regards to home life.

If/When you have kids will you quit working : She wants to desperately but can't because she brings home the main paycheck. She normally works from 8am until 7pm every day and has to take conference calls and work while on vacation. With the exception of the birth, she has had to work in some capacity on every one of her daughter's birthdays. Her mom works as the main caretaker for her daughter so that she doesn't have to spend the money on daycare, but otherwise her child care bill would range in the $10k-$20k due to the hours she and her husband work.

Moneypenny, I always wanted to get my mph, but was deterred by the whole job thing.  I took a lot of PH classes in undergrad and loved them.
  • My FI is a lawyer, here are his answers :)

He is a criminal defense attorney (yeah, it's helping the 'bad guys' but he believes everyone deserves equal representation.)

He loves what he does-it is the type of law he dreamed of doing

He's been practicing a year, pretty fresh outta law school.

We want to wait several years for children but he has said multiple times that he will at least take off his paternity leave when we have kids.  He is the breadwinner in the family though so it would be hard to live off one income if it was mine.

He went to law school because he was at a standstill with his life. He had graduated from University, and worked managing a hotel.  He knew he could doing something more with his life.  His dad and brother are attorneys so he applied for law school and ended up loving it.

    Ooh, I'm in law school--do I count?

What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice? I want to be a criminal prosecutor.  Right now I'm a legal assistant for an attorney who does personal injury and worker's compensation
Do you wish you were doing something different? I certainly do not want to do PI or WC when I graduate, if I can help it.
How long have you been practicing law?  I graduate December 2011, I've worked as a legal assistant for 3 years
If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? No
why did you go to law school in the first place? I really want to be a prosecutor, and I hope to some day focus on sex offenses and crimes against children, because it's something I feel really strongly about.  Putting people like that in prison is the reason for going to law school.

Excellent!  And you're in Chicago now?
  • Brie -
Small world, I'm in Law Admissions as well (although I didn't go to law school.)  It really is a great field to work in.
  • What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice? Labor & Employment and Civil Rights
Do you wish you were doing something different? No
How long have you been practicing law? 6
If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? No
why did you go to law school in the first place?  My reasons for wanting to do it and my interests in different areas have changed, but I wanted to be a lawyer since I was in high school.
  • What kind of law do you practice? Criminal defense and civil rights litigation.

Do you wish you were doing something different? Hell no! I did worker's compensation and personal injury before we moved to Chicago and I hated it.  I always wanted to work in criminal law and thought I'd be a prosecutor in law school.  There's no way I'd work for the State's Attorney's office here, though.  I have friends who do, and as much as I love them, I can't stomach the things they're willing to do sometimes just to win.

How long have you been practicing law? 5 years.

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? No, I'd lose my mind if I didn't work .  I really love my job.

Why did you go to law school in the first place? I decided to go to law school when I was 7.  I was arguing with my dad and he said, "You like to argue so much, you should be a lawyer when you grow up!" I remember thinking "You can get paid to argue with people?! Where do I sign up!"

Seriously though, I decided to go to law school to make a difference, even if it's just for one person.  I get a lot of satisfaction in knowing that my clients needed someone to look out for them and I could help them.

I loooove seeing so many lawyers :-)  I am a fresh graduate!  And, I'm currently studying for the bar at the end of the month.  I am sooooo ready for this part of the process to be over!!!

What kind of law do you (or do you want to) practice?  I am hoping to be a criminal prosecutor....but at this point, I'll take what I can get.

Do you wish you were doing something different?  I'm hoping I'll have the same love for it as I currently have.

How long have you been practicing law? I got my first experience in 2007 working as a college intern at the US District Attorney's Office, and I have been working at my local city attorney's office since 2008....so, that would be 3 years!

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? Probably not.  I'm hoping to work for the government so I have great benefits for my family and work predominately 9-5.  There are a great number of parents at my job, and it is motivating to me to see them balance work and family.  Also, FI's dad is an attorney, and as a partner in a small firm he says that he was able to take the time off to spend with the family...likely not something he would have been able to do if he was at some big time firm.

why did you go to law school in the first place? too much L&O?!  I realized I like to argue logically, and I am fairly good with thinking on my feet.  I think these attributes fit well into being a trial lawyer.  I am also completely fascinated with the criminal justice system and criminal law (I was a criminology major in undergrad....what else can you do with that degree?!)

Do you wish you were doing something different? No.  I just wish the income was more stable (I work for myself).

How long have you been practicing law? 15 years.

If/when you have kids, do you think you'll quit working? N/A, not planning to have kids.

why did you go to law school in the first place?  I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was 16.
