Vows

Who is writing their own vows or using some that are anything but the traditional? Who is using traditional vows?

FI said he didn't want to write his own vows, but our reverend gave us a list of vows to look over (only one was the traditional), and now we're not sure what to go with! I've found some online we like, but it's hard to choose! Part of me would love to write our own, but I don't know that FI would go for it

FI wants to do our own vows and I was really nervous. I had a book that was handed down to me from another bride, and our pastor gave it to us too and it has great examples of vows. It has a few "traditional" vows and a ton of others. We are using it as a guide almost and using those vows that we like. It's called The Wedding Ceremony Planner, by Johnson. It might help you guys.

We bought that book too and used it as a basic guide. After reading through it, writing our own became much easier. There are some good examples of what people are using on the vows message board (though it's not as active as I wish it was over there).

We've psuedo-written our own. Basically we took the standard format our pastor gave us and modified it a fair bit until it still had the traditional aspects but also pleased both of us.

The one beef we both have with people writing their own vows is that it becomes a giant list of compliments "ie. I love you so much, you make me a better person, etc, etc." Those aren't vows.. they're compliments. Vows are promises of things that both parties will do during the marriage and end with a statement of longevity ie. "until death us do part."

I am horrible with things like that, we're just doing the traditional vows. I just told the Pastor, whatever he does, to keep the word 'obey' out of everythng! hehehe

I agree with this. I'm writing our whole ceremony so in a way I'm writing our vows but I'm keeping them basic. Personal to us, but vows that could really be used by anyone at the same time. I'm not a fan of the vows that aren't really promises.

My vows are just that, a list of promises that I am making to him. I'm not a fan of just complimenting the other person. It's about the committment that we're making to each other. To me that includes promises.

We are not writing our own vows. We are going to pick them out though. Our officiant gave us a 100 page document so we can put together our ceremony. I will probably modify things but we are not starting from scratch. The vows for both of us will be the same.

Going traditional. We both love that they're the same words couples have been saying to eachother for centuries. It's a timeless appeal that really works for us.

We're writting our own. Our whole ceremony will be very personalized to us so we felt our vows should match.

</div><div>Yup, I think we're going to do this too. We wrote our entire ceremony (basically took things that we found different places online, in literature, etc). We'll probably modify traditional vows to fit us better.</div>

We're writing our own. Totally FI's idea and I was nervous at first but its not as taunting a task as I thought it would be. Especially after a good date night!
