  • For magazine subscriptions, I just changed the name the next time they came up for renewal. For doctors, I just changed it the next time I had an appointment. Utilities are still in  my old name. Things like discount cards aren't worth changing. All my credit cards (except for Bank of America, who are a PITA) allowe me to change my name online.

So basically, you don't need to do it all at once. I went to the Social Security office, who sent the info to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The trip to each place took ten minutes (print out and fill out the forms ahead of time) each. Other than that, it was just credit cards and the bank for the important stuff.

  • Thanks for posting this.  I see a lot of it as little details along the way.  I think the big one is Social, registrations  and work info.  When I get to that point I will probably do the big things and then as little things come up take care of those.
  • Well, I changed FB already and that was the big one, so I have a head start. Wink

Yeah, I'm not even going to worry about the small things. As long as the biggies aren't too much of a hassle, this shouldn't be too bad.
  • I think you can update your passport for free if you do it in a year after the wedding. That is one thing I didn't do that I should have.

  • Nates, nothing is official until it's FB official.  That's the most important one of all!
  • oh yeah, FB. i was being all silly at first saying I wouldn't change my FB name until it was legal. that lasted a week and half.

  • Koda, we didn't do it. I will probably do it when we refinance.

Yes- this is correct.  You have to send a certified copy of your marriage license, the form, and a new picture.

  • Oooh, I will check out the passport info because mine is expired.  I wonder if it's only free if you have a current passport or totally free. Mine expires this year.
  • Brandi- I had to pay for my passport and I did it within a year of my wedding so its not always true.

Im with Ali- its not that big of a deal to change your name on stuff.  You just do it as it comes up.

  • I've probably only changed my name on half of my stuff. I did most of the major things, but I've been lazy about it. I still have my maiden name for my truck loan and for Michaels jeep. I figure it doesn't matter too much, it's not like my actual ss number changed.

  • I didn't find it too difficult. I did the big things when I moved in with DH, and the small things as they came up.
But then, I left my HSA in my maiden name until I closed the account this week, and haven't bothered with my passport. Everything else was really easy.

  • Yes- Blue and Duds are right.  I was reading that the wrong way.  I got mine shortly before the wedding so I had a year to get it changed (since it was the first year I had it).  Sorry for being confusing.

  • Ah, okay. I thought that sound too good to be true :P

  • Changing my name on everything took a total of maybe 45 minutes if you add it all up. 10 min at DMV, 5 min at SS, taking 2 min before my drs appt/dentist, couple min at the bank.  Its REALLY not that big of a deal.

  • It certainly doesn't all have to be done at once, I just made a master list so eventually I get them all done. I've just had some issues with my school/financial aid stuff and at work with IT.

  • I have hated the name-changing process. Primarily because it felt like a lot of the places I tried it at, it took me 3-4 times to get them to actually change it correctly. At work- I think I had to change it in 10 different systems. I mean, it sucked. The DMV and SS office were actually some of the easiest places to do it.
  • I didn't do all of the things listed.  Magazines, utility bills, etc.  They don't give a schitz what your name is, they only care that you pay them.
