How long after the engagement did you find your hall/vendors

I just got engaged on Christmas.  The second thing everone says after congratulations is when's the wedding.  It's been a week.  Am I supposed to know this already?

My fiance is all lets enjoy the engagement.  I've already started researching.  What is a good time frame to start getting the vendors in order.  I think we've decided on a fall 2014 wedding but it seems so far off!

We got engaged in May 2010 and started looking at venues right away. We decided on one in July 2010.  To be honest we go the last Saturday they had for March 2012, it just happened to be the one I had my heart set on.  It's very common to book your wedding venue more than 18 months out in our area. You would be surprised but some are already full.  Moral of the story- start looking now.

  • My FI and I booked our venue in May of 2012 for April 2014.  Our venue was pretty open for 2014, but other venues we looked at were already booking up and one venue had an appointment after us for a 2015 wedding.  I say start looking very soon.

  • We booked our venue June 2011 for our April 2013 wedding.  And while people shouldn't be attacking you with questions because you just got engaged.  Just say to people, "We don't know any of the details yet, we are just enjoying our engagement."  People are just excited and don't realize that you may want to just enjoy the engagement glow for a little while.  But I would start looking at venues because places do book quickly.

  • I'd start looking as soon as your ready so you get the venue and vendors of your choice.  I got engaged in september and I already have my venue and dj booked.  I knew a lot of girls would be getting engaged over the holidays and would most likely be going for a 2014 wedding date and I didnt want to have to settle for my 2nd option.  My fiance and I are still enjoying our engagement despite the fact that we have these things booked!
  • We booked in January 2012 for August 2013. Things go FAST in this area, so definitely start researching and looking!

  • We started looking almost immediately. We booked for April 2013 in April of 2012. Things do go fast, but don't make the process miserable for yourself. Get on it and then just be prepared to adjust your needs/expectations based on what's available.
  • Since you're not looking to get married until 2014 you have time so I don't think you need to panic or feel pressured to run out and book your venue.  That said I would use the time wisely to research places, look around and find the best option available to you.  Then once you find what you're looking for - book it and don't look back.

It really varies from person to person.

We got engaged at the end of August of 2012, and booked all vendors in early October 2012 (for an October 2013 wedding - so 1 year in advance) I actually knew a lot of the vendors I wanted to use, and found their availability for certain dates, and then booked everything within a 15 minute period (Church, pastor, event painter, dj, florist, photographer - I sorta knew in advance from other weddings, family connections, etc) I just had to find a venue I liked that was open on the same time as all of the others. I then found a venue, got some available dates from them, compared to all the other open dates, and then booked away!

Right after we got engaged, we just enjoyed the time together for a few weeks and then I started researching.  By early October, we visited a few places and then booked after we found what we liked. We have also been together for over 7 years, so a long engagement isn't really necessary, and we are "older" (I'll be 30, he'll be 33 at the time of the wedding.)

It depends if you need to save money for a house or for the wedding, or if you need to finish school, or if you are ready now and don't even need a year to plan. Good luck!

  • We actually just need to save up for the wedding itself since we have a large guest list.  We have a house already and school was some time ago so that's not a worry.  It just seems like everyone is rushing everything when I just want to take my time.
  • I feel relieved that I'm not the only one with a 2+ year engagement. The ladies at work are wondering why I'm waiting so long and it was starting to get under my skin. We just got engaged but I'm looking into April or May of 2015
  • I have been engaged since January 28, 2012 and our wedding date isn't until October 11, 2014.

I have been searching for a reception venue since early May, FI and I have finally decided upon one and are currently working on the contract; FI knew from the beginning he wanted the ceremony to take place in the curch his family attends, I just called yesterday and I have to wait to January 8, 2013 to book it!

Fall 2014 will come quicker than you realize! I can't believe I've been engaged almost a year already! Just take your time and enjoy this experience. You're only suppose to have it once in a lifetime. :)

  • We got engaged at the beginning of July and then booked our venue at the beginning of August. We are getting married in November. It's definitely better to book as soon as possible- especially if you have a specific date in mind. When I started looking, I found that a few places were already booked, and that was 15 months ahead!
  • We booked our reception venue about 2 years in advance, the photographer about 18 months in advance, the videographer and DJ about one year in advance, the florist about 3 months and the limo was really last minute, at about two weeks (I kind of slacked off on that).

  • 2-5 weeks after I booked reception hall and church. 5-10 weeks after I booked photographer, dj, videographer, florist.

I was on a very tight timeline though. We had a 10 month engagement so I wanted to get all the big vendors booked first. There were some vendors that I wanted but couldnt use because they were already booked by the time I inquired.
