DJ shopping how tos?

I have looked around at different DJ web sites listed on the knot... but just curious who is everyone using for a DJ (if your using a DJ) and how do you know if you like their style?  Anyone using a DJ with a projector//flat panel TVs to display photos?

I used Chris Stevens from DJs Available and he was pretty good.  I know DJs Available offers other things like dance props and gobos of the bride and groom's names but I am not sure about a picture show.

We're using Gregg from Ambient DJ.  We interviewed a few djs to get a sense of their personalities, to see who meshed well with us and who didin't (we dont want a loud, over-the-top dj, though some people like that!) but we wanted someone who knows how to read a crowd and is versatile.  So we met with them, then we looked at sample videos they provided with us to get a sense of the kind of music they play and their personal dj style.  A lot of djs will post videos of weddings they've done on their websites, so you can start with that.

I'm using Joe Moser of DJ's Available.  You can go to one of their showcases and pick your DJ.  They also have uplighting, strobe lights, gobo, smoke machines, projector & screen, lighted trees, and ceremony live musicians for hire.

I'm using Lou from Dynamic Crew.  It's the 3rd time we're using him and he's fantastic.  He has a rear projection screen for pictures (he likes to play them during the first dance, during the father/daughter and mother/son dances).  He's got a ton of things to use to enhance your wedding.

I'm using Champion Sound Produtions.  I saw him do my cousins wedding over a year ago and was really impressed.  He kept everyone out on the dance floor all night and was good at reading the crowd.  It worked out nicely that he was right at the amount I wanted to pay.  I don't know if he does any of the TV/Photo thing though.

Totally agree with Lana. We interviewed a lot of people to see whose personality we liked the best and who will do what we want them to do. We've met a few DJs who were timid or said that if they get requests they'll play guests requests. Well I'm sorry but we're paying you to be there, we are your boss for the night, so we want you to play what we want you to play. Some DJs didn't agree with me and some did. Just keep searching for ones that meshes with your personality. Some will even let you come to an event to see them perform.

We're not doing a projector or anything but our DJ does have an intelligent light system so it'll look like a club.

We are using Sean from Center Stage Entertainment. We went around and met with a lot of different DJ's. We were looking for a specific type of personality not overly cheesy but one who will put their foot down if guests try and take over the music, we aren't into props being handed out etc. It's tough to get an idea just from a website. You can also have them play a sample of what type of style of music they usually play at a wedding and you can always ask for reviews from their most recent weddings.

We are using Paul Cole from DJ's Available.  I know a lot of people who have used DJ's Available in general and a few people who have used Paul specifcally.  We went to a few DJ showcases and then met with a few DJ's and that's how we decided who we would ultimately choose.
