Flowers in October

Hi ladies,

For our centerpieces  we are doing an assortment of mason jars with candles inside and glass bottles with flowers inside. Flowers are not incredibly important to us so I am not going through a florist. I'm planning on getting flowers from either the farmer's market or Costco/Sam's club. I'm not picky about what type of flowers, but I don't want roses. We don't really need bouquets for the centerpieces as only a few flowers will fit in each bottle, but I suppose already made bouquets would be ideal for me and the bridesmaids. Our wedding is October 8th and I'm wondering if this is a feasible option. What are your thoughts on this? Would it be too risky to buy the flowers the day before?

Thanks!
Amanda

I personally wouldn't wait until the day before...just simply because it would be stressful. But I am in no way a do it yourself-er for flowers. That would scare me too much. I am relying heavily on my mom to do my flowers. She is just starting her own business doing flowers for events (mostly weddings) and she will be my rock for this part of the wedding. That way I don't have to worry about it.
If you want bouquets done, you could hire a florist for just those and do the rest of the flowers yourself. My mom has had that request before. I only recommend it because bouquets are quite difficult to put together (both arranging and physically holding it all together).

Hope that helped a little bit :)

Farmers market vendors do weddings all the time, so I would speak to them personally to see how they prefer to do it. Sometimes they will have you come to their property to tell them what you like so they can bring it prepared ahead of time. Other times you can just tell them what you like from their market stall and they can come prepared with bouquets set aside with your name on them. Either way, you should let them know you're coming.

I'm sure you've thought about this, but in case you haven't, I'll mention that for an October wedding you run the risk of having very few options at the farmers market. You just don't know if it's going to be an early-freeze year. But if Costco/Sam's is a back-up you should be okay.

There may not be as many flower options in Oct, but you can get a ton of different chrysanthemums in Sept-Oct!  There's all kinds of colors and sizes--the button mums are so cute and compact!  Plus the nice thing about mums is they last a LONG time before wilting.  Fall color flowers are so pretty!  Can't wait to see pics!

I was going to suggest the same thing as the PP! Mums are pretty hearty and durable so they would be a great choice for assembling ahead of time. I'm excited to hear about what you decided to do!

My sister-in-law stopped off at the Farmer's Market for half of our centerpieces the day off the wedding, September 12th. I worked out just fine for us. I can't promise the same results, but we didn't have any issues!

Dahlias are always nice and I think they're usually in season in October.  How late into October is the Farmer's market open?

Trader Joes has nice flowers, too, and they aren't too crazy expensive, either!
