DIY flower bouquet

is anyone planning on making their own bouquets? do you know how hard it may be?

Re: DIY flower bouquet

  • I don't think it's too difficult. There are free flower arranging classes you can take at Michael's to get some practice. Plus there are tons of tutorials on youtube and other website.

  • I made my own toss bouquet out of a large bunch of tulips. It was frustrating and I'd never do that again.
  • If you're on Pinterest, you can find quite a few tutorials.  I would suggest practicing, if you can.  But flowers need to be bought at least two days prior to the wedding.
  • I previously worked in flower wholesale and will say without a doubt DO NOT DO YOUR OWN!

its a lot harder than it looks! even putting the simplest thing together is a lot harder than you might think.

Also florists know how to treat flowers and get a bouquet to stay looking fresh through your entire day of use and abuse. after I post this message I am going to dig up a  post i left a few months ago in response to someone else with this idea.

  • The below is what I wrote to a girl that wanted to get wholesale flowers to do her own:

as someone who previously worked in flower wholesale (in calgary not toronto) I feel I should warn you that MOST wholesalers will NOT sell to the public and if they do the price is jacked up to almost retail.

that being said, many florists will order flowers for you from the wholesaler and give you a better deal on them.

another word of caution: have you ever worked with wholesale flowers before?
they are not as easy to deal with as you may think...for example:

Roses come bunched so tight they need to be set in jugs of water loosely for up to 3 days just to open and the outer protective petals need to be removed.

lily's come unbloomed and if you are not careful they easily rot if not treated properly.

in addition to that, you buy wholesale by the bunch not the stem, IE roses come in bunches  of 25 so if you only need 60, you MUST buy them by the bunch and get 75.

also, if you are not a florist its hard to know how to treat the flowers to ensure they will last through your day without wilting/drooping and so forth.

sorry to be such a negative nelly,,,

its for these reasons and more that I decided to just hire a florist.

Good luck to you if you are doing all your own.
