Map insert for invite?

How on earth do you make these?  Every time I get an invitation with a map on it, they look professionally done... have you ladies just drawn them yourselves?

Your venue may have some that they've already prepared which is what I was able to do.  Otherwise you can use programs like Word or publisher and basically trace a screen shot of the map and then delete the picture behind it.   And last but not least, you can use something like http://www.weddingmapper.com/ which is what I did to do some for my sister who forgot to include one in the invite!

I had the same issue. I used these instructions while working on mine-

    http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/05/04/diy-invitation-map/

I wasn't able to copy/paste the map directly, so I did make a screen shot and trace over that in powerpoint, and google images (highway 10, I694 etc to get icons to put on major roads) It actually went pretty smoothly.

I did the Google map > screen shot > trace in publisher method. :)

Ditto Steph, I typed up instructions in my bio on how I made mine:

"To make them,  I just found a map that I liked on mapquest, google maps, or the website of the location, hit the print screen button on my computer (PRTSC), copied it into powerpoint, cropped it down to size, and then drew lines over everything that I wanted to include on my map. I then deleted the picture and voila, instant map. Well not instant, more like a couple hours for the three of them"

I used a map from a fellow knottie but FI used this site for his first trial run and said it was very user friendly. I have used it for other things NWR.

I found someone who was looking to break into the wedding map world and she did mine for free...loved it!! Here it is:

her email is: erica.efinestationery@gmail.com  -- she may be still very cheap trying to break in :-) (she also might have an Etsy shop, not sure, sorry!)

Mine was way more complicated than it's worth... and probably not feasible unless you have AutoCAD!  We ended up not including ours in our invitation and will be passing them out at the ceremony instead.

I drew the roads and symbols in AutoCAD (computer aided drafting program) by tracing over a google image of the map, exported a PDF, imported the PDF into photoshop and added all the other elements like location images and whatnot.

Ha!  Too funny Newlyseliski - I thought about doing that for my sister's until I found weddingmapper.  :)  DH and I own a drafting business so we have AutoCAD on our computers at home but I ended up deciding it was too much work.  :)

I was going to do maps too when I was planning the big thing...I think I was just going to use Google Maps and try to make it look pretty with Word though.

It is funny you mention AutoCAD, I used to work for a company that employed a lot of engineers so I've installed it so many times!

Yup... definitely way too much work for the wedding map... but pretty darn handy for detailed, annotated and to-scale floor plans of the reception venue for caterers, A/V setup and rentals vendors :)  Yes... I am a nerd.  We just got AutoDesk Architectural Desktop 2012 installed at our office and I'm pretty excited!
