Arranged Seating at Rehearsal Dinner?

Are table assignments common/required for the rehearsal dinner or is this something that might depend on the venue for the dinner? FMIL mentioned to FI that she had been working on a seating arrangement for ours and, if possible, this is something I would really rather avoid due to some complicated family issues (grandparents divorced and don't get along).  TIA!

    If your FMIL is hosting the RD, then she should get to decide on the details, such whether to have assigned seating. Plus, this can be used to your advantage. Just let FMIL know that the grandparents should not be seated together. Problem solved.

    I get that he who pays gets to make the decisions, but the issue here is that there is not enough family to seat my grandparents at a different table with my family.  FMIL has decided to seat my family and FI's family separately and due to the drama between my grandparents, seat my grandfather and step-grandmother with FI's family.  Since my family was estranged from my grandfather until about 2 years ago, I feel that this might make them feel like they're not really a part of my family :(

    I mean... if she's the one who wants assigned seating, then I would just share these concerns with her and let her figure out the best way to do the seating.

    Although, I have to say, if there's drama about who sits where, assigned seating is probably going to be better than non-assigned. I mean, what would happen if there was no assigned seating and your grandparents ended up having to sit next to each other because those were the open seats? or across the room completely separated from anyone they know because THOSE were the open seats? That's the kind of drama assigned seating usually alleviates, not causes.
