Venue Vs. Flowers - Wedding on a Budget

I am going back and forth about having my 2013 wedding at a venue that I love (buts eats the budget considerably) or sacrificing the venue for other aspects of the wedding such as a live band and flowers. At the moment I am leaning toward picking the venue that I love and considerably lowering my budget on all other aspects of the wedding. With that said, will $1500.00 be enough for my flower budget. I am looking at a brides bouquet, 3 bridesmaids, 3 groomsmen, groom, mothers and fathers flowers and 17 table centerpieces. One idea I had is doing 8 center pieces with flowers 9 with candles - I also love the babys breath ter pieces but wondering if they are as inexpensive as they sound.  Does $1500.00 sound realistic/do-able or should I move on from the dream venue?

Re: Venue Vs. Flowers - Wedding on a Budget

  • I'm sacrificing flowers and such for my venue. My budget is going to be around 2k, for 6 BM bouquets, 6 bouts, parents' flowers and centerpieces. I'm buying my own brooch bouquet, so that won't come out of the budget. I would definitely go with the venue you love. I think you could get all that with $1500, especially if you did some candle centerpieces and you aren't too picky about the particular types of flowers used.

  • For me, venue is one of my primary concerns. I would make a list of your top THREE priorities-- this is some of the best advice I got-- and see how this partiular decision would affect these things. For example, if having flowers as those centerpieces is in those top three, then sacrifice the venue.

MAYBE consider having different centerpieces that aren't floral to afford the venue? Like you said, half candles is a good idea-- maybe consider all candles? This might help balance your flowers budget--and perhaps help leave money to make your boquet better? That will be in so many more pictures than centerpieces, you know?

This is not the answer you were looking for, as I'm not sure what that amount of flowers would run you, but I hope that it helps anyway. =)

  • Is there another venue that is similar to the one you love, but will allow you to afford the extras?

I fell in love with one venue that fit my budget. The place was so grand that everything in it would have to be to match. So, I knew if I cut back on flowers, it would look shortchanged. But, I feel like there are some venues that are just so stunning, no one will even notice if you have flowers on the table!!

I agree with the THREE priorities suggestion completely. Someone told me that, and that is why I ended up going with another venue that I now adore. In the end, I found out that I'm the bride that likes to add personal touches to "make it my own," which I wouldn't have been able to do with the first venue.

Good luck! I hope you have fun with it! I actually really liked going to look at all of the venues... I think I'm weird.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! I am very torn but  your comments leave me feeling optimistic! Does anyone know anything about the babies breath centerpieces. The images I have seen are tall centerpieces with baby's breath orbs on top...I am wonder if they are affortable or if popularity has driven their price up. I will keep everyone posted on my decision - which I am hoping for is sooner than later! Thanks again :)
  • Personally, I would go with a great band. Years from now, people probably won't remember what your venue looked liked....but they will remember how much fun they had. However, at the end of the day, you should pick the thing that matter the most to you...it is your day:)

We did non-floral centerpieces and I DIY'ed the bouquets. I think I spent about $45 on all the flowers. I vote venue!

  • I vote for venue over flowers...

  • That is a very small budget for flowers, but if you are willing to have some tables without flowers it might work.

  • A live band, correct me if I'm wrong (I prefer DJs), can cost 10K.

Flowers/candles you can make work on ANY budget if you're flexible. I have heard recommendations to go to local farmers with a florist on staff or Nursies, so you can keep that down. If it's only a matter of flowers, I'd agree with everyone else to pick vennue you love.

But if you are scrapping flowers, entertainment, more?, then the top three rule has served me well.

I would think they'd be pretty affordable. Consider renting the tall vases if you're going DIY. Otherwise I'd call around and get some quotes. See below:
