Oh Morals.... (long)

I have been battling back and forth with Macy's since our wedding. Here is the story I'll CN at the end.

No one purchased our All Clad 10 piece cooking set. (Pots, Pans and Skillets) The package retails for $600some, so I wasn't surprised. We ended up getting some gift cards and with our coupons and perks with my Macy's CC and waiting until they went on sale, we got them for $100 out of pocket. Plus a free $100 lasagna pan. SCORE.

When it came time to give a shipping address, I gave our new one since I was going down for an interview and was quoted 2 days shipping time. Well turns out it took longer than 5 days to get them and I had to come back to Minnesota. Our new apartment doesn't sign for packages and UPS only holds them for 5 days at their holding center then returns it back to Macy's. I caught it before it made it back to the Macy's warehouse, the sales rep was going to have their manager just replace the order and have them shipped to my Minnesota address. She said to call back Monday, gave me her ext. and blah blah. Well her line was busy almost all day monday so I called the reg line. They told me the Warehouse sent me back the GCs so they can replace the order I'll just have to wait until I get the credit and repurchase it myself.

Kid you not on Wes, the nice UPS guy comes knocking on my door with our pots and pans. I was pumped, however confused. So today imagine my surprise when I get a $400 GC in the mail from Macy's for my "return". I felt like I was playing monopoly. Macy's error in my favor collect $400. :) Although it would be wrong to keep it, so I called them to let them know about the error.

I got the RUDEST customer service rep ever! She grunted and sighed as I gave her my info, order numbers etc. Put me on hold for 20 mins. She came back and said we canceled the GC. No thank you for giving us our $400 back because of this cluster, NOTHING. I am bummed they didn't even care. Granted $400 in the scheme of Macy's isn't that big of a deal, but sh!t I could have went a pretty d@mn nice shopping spree. Especially since I am unemployed now.

CN: Macy's error in my favor they gave me $400 I didn't deserve. I called to return it and they were mega rude that I was wasting their time. In the end they took back the money with no Thank You :(

Oh I would have kept it Shan! I know, bad morals but that's $400! ;)

I hate customer service representatives. I seem to always get the rude ones! And I hate waiting FOREVER on the phone just to get a hold of somebody and the line gets dropped. Ugh.

Yes you have some very good morals!!
That is frustating, especially since you had to deal with a super rude representative.

Write to corporate. Explain that CS like that disappoints you because you were trying to do the ethical thing, etc. etc.

That's what I'd do! I'm big on customer service and letting people know if it wasn't the best service. Macy's probably doesn't wanted to be represented in that way. That might sound b!tchy but one of my biggest pet peeves is when people are rude while doing their jobs.

The recording asked me if I wanted to take a survey at the end of the call. I said yes, but I guess they didn't pick me. What a shame.

This was probably my 5th call to Macy's and every other time they were nice/pleasant. But this last one was something else. She was short and had an attitude when she asked me.. "so... you still want the merchandise." I simply replied yes I always have, we just missed the delivery. "Well perhaps you should plan better for being there when the shipment arrives" I wanted to strangle her, thank god my Minnesota nice showed through my annoyance.

Even her rudness doesn't mean I deserve the $400. But I was expecting a little more recognition that I took it upon myself to correct the error and give them back the money. This is why people don't do the right thing.

Oh well I guess that is a rant for another day. :)

ugh. I'm sorry you had to deal with rude people. Customer service people!! Companies should not hire people that can't put away their attitude for a shift! And for crying out loud it was because you were trying to help THEM out... frustrating >_<

I definitely would tell corporate.  Did you get her name?  Companies do like to know when their customers are being treated so rudely.  A 'thank you' would have been more than adequate, a $25 gift card or 20% off coupon or something would have been a generous compensation for the ethics you presented!  And would have earned them a valued customer.

Consider the fact that karma does come around.  I do believe that!  Yesterday in London, we bought full day passes for the Underground.  When I went back to my room and changed, I left it in my jeans so I had to buy another one when I went back out and realized I had forgotten it.  So later that afternoon when I went back, I grabbed the extra card.  It was pointless for me to have two, and I couldn't get any value from it, so I decided to give it away.  I could have thrown it out or ignored it until it expired, but I figured why not.  I walked into the underground, saw a girl waiting in line to buy the ticket, and offered it to her.  She was so shocked and offered to pay for it, and I declined.  She gave me a big smile and an enthusiastic, "Thanks!" which was more than enough!

Except that in my haste to catch my train, my other ticket fell out of my pocket behind me.  So I would have had to buy ANOTHER one, except a young girl saw it, picked it up and chased after me to give it back!  Now THAT's good karma!
