Boston in the Fall...

FI and I have decided on a New England Honeymoon October 21-27. We are thinking about taking a few day trips out of Boston to maybe NYC or Maine. Anyone have suggestions on where to stay in Boston, and any ideas on day trips? Also, we are on a budget of $2500 including a flight from Dallas to Boston. Thanks in Advance!!

Re: Boston in the Fall...

  • You should probably take a day/night trip to NH or VT to stay at a B&B to do some leaf peeping.  :)
  • I live in Boston and can tell you so much to see and do in the city or day trips from the city. Kind of depends your interested. Leaf peeping for sure, museums, salem (all the witch trials), sporting events, shows, even the ben and jerry ice cream factory isn't too far away (vermont). Actually Cape Cod is a great place still in the fall if you want to relax on the beach or tour the mansions in Newport. Any questions or more specifics feel free to send me a message. Hotel prices vary, just need to do a little digging.

I'm from Boston. NYC would be a far and tiring for a day trip. Kittery or Portland Maine would be doable day trips. however, there's more than enough to do in Boston. You could spend one day in Cambridge ( pizza at cambridge one is awesome, check out cuchi cuchi for cocktails and dinner). Walk around the north end (modern pastry is better than mikes, pompeii restaurant, dinner on the roof deck at fiore, or dinner at al forno ) Faniuel hall not much special for food there, fenway (game on has great burgers, cask and flaggon is fun, eastern standard is great for cocktails and dinner). Skip the cape, but take a day trip to the Boston harbor islands. No need to rent a car. Also skip cheers. Terrible food. The 21st amendment is a dive on beacon hill thats good for a beer. I also like 6B for cocktails. You can have drinks at top of the hub. You can rent swan boats, take a duck tour. Have fun!
  • Salem is a great day trip idea.

All of this, but I say Mike's over Modern anyday!!!!!
  • NYC is going to be waaay too far for a day trip, but I second the idea of Salem, which will be really neat in October since it's getting close to Halloween.  I love Cape Cod in the fall, but it'll definitely be pretty quiet, with a lot of restaurants closed for the season.   Last year we were there Columbus Day weekend w/ 80+ degree temps though, so you might get lucky!
  • why not split time between boston and nyc then? nyc is 5 hours from boston by car and is many hours by train. not a good day trip at all.

  • I used to live near Boston and I think it's lovely in the fall.

I planned my entire driving honeymoon by using www.tripadvisor.com. Look into areas or cities you might want to visit (pick ones in NH or VT for sure), then find B&B's or hotels in those areas. Maine is definitely worth seeing, I think a trip to York Beach, there and back, would be nice.

You could also simply make it a travel honeymoon and rent a car at the airport, drive to your hotel in Boston, then make arrangements at various places in other states, returning to Boston at the end to fly home. I agree, NYC is a 5 hr drive each way in good traffic, but you could do both as someone above suggested. However, hotels or B&B's in the New England states will probably be cheaper than NYC hotels.

If you like history, you can do a walking tour of Boston and see all the Revolutionary War stuff, the Old North Church, the cemeteries (yes, in the middle of the city!). You are probably too young to remember JFK, but the JFK library was one of my favorite sites.

You can also sign up for weekly emails with www.travelzoo.com for hotels, car rental and air fare deals. They send an email weekly of their "top 20" deals, and many are not last minute types of deals, you can book 3 months in advance.

Good luck. We are going to Maine next month to visit friends, and I'm so psyched to take my new hubby there, he's never been.
  • I recently moved up to Boston and absolutely love the city so I was SUPER excited to see your post. . I am still new to the city but have done a bunch of the touristy stuff. . .just some of my favorites:

-Top of the Hub (romantic, relatively pricey restaurant at the top of the Prudential building---ask for a table my the window and you will get some an amazing view of the city. . .we ate there later getting engaged) then go walk by the reflecting pool outside the Christian Science building
-Walk around the Public Gardens, Charles River, Library, and Boston Common
-Eat in the North End one night for some good Italian food and have lunch at Fanueil Hall
-Take the water taxi to Charlestown and you can get a great view of the city (super cheap, I think $2.00 each way) or dinner on a harbor cruise
-I also love the JFK museum. . .especially the part at the end of the museum. . .great view of the harbor
-Museum of Fine Art is free on Wednesdays in the late afternoon (I wouldn't suggest going and paying the full price for admission--too pricey!) and the Institute of Contemporary art is free on Thursday in the late afternoon
-I would recommend not staying in a hotel on the waterfront area because there are not many T stops near. . .I would rec staying somewhere in the city. . .maybe Copley Square :)

The subway (called the T) is easy to navigate and the city is pretty small so you can walk to most places

-Six Flags of New England is about an hour outside of the city. . . we love roller coasters so go here yearly.  Not the best Six Flags (NJ is def better) but always fun!

I have not been to the Cape but people I work with just love to go there on the weekends. . .it might be a little chilly in the Fall but I bet still a great area to visit--look into visitng P town.  There is a ferry to the cape and I would recommend that mode of transportation because I have heard the traffic getting to and from the Cape can be quite annoying.

As a kid, we always vacationed in Maine with that being said I just love it up there!  Look into the Downeastern train--it goes from Boston up to major vacationing spots in NH and ME.  The beaches will probably be a bit chilly in the fall in Maine but great to check out for a few days. You could possibly rent someone's beach cottage.  There isn't much to do in Maine besides sit by the beach and eat (lobster!  I love the lobster pound in Wells Beach!) and have ice cream nightly but I love that type of environment for a few days--not more than 5 days because then I become quite antsy.

Portland is super cute town! Definitely recommend checking it out.

Providence is close to Boston and the Newport Mansions are amazing to check out! The Breakers :)

I love going to Vermont to ski in the winter because it is absolutely beautiful out there! I haven't been in the Fall but I bet it is still beautiful escepially if you like hiking. Stowe is a great town and the resort on the base of the mountain seems great--I would love to stay there someday. . .also the Ben and Jerry's factory is in Stowe (I think or at least very close). Burlington is also a beautiful city but kinda far.

New Hampshire. . .check out Mt. Washington. White Mountain Nat Forest is beautiful (North Conway).   Hiking by Lake Sunapee is beautiful!

I apologize for the long post but message me if you need any help.  I'm so happy you picked Boston for a honeymoon location :) As you can probably tell, I just love it around here!
