Casual China

My fiance and I are struggling to find high-quality every day china / dishes (safe for dishwasher and microwaves, etc.

We prefer more modern styles.

Any brands / lines you can recommend?  My mother's Mikasa has lasted over 15 years, no chips.

We can register for them at Macy's, Bloomindales or Crate and Barrel.

Thank you ladies!

Re: Casual China

  • I picked out three different colors of Fiestaware.

  • I also went with Fiesta. I actually made a Kohl's registry, much to the dismay of some of the other posters, just so I can get Fiesta. I've already received 2 placesettings :D
  • I registered for Lenox French Pearle at Macy's.  I love it, but I'm not sure I would call it modern.

I would suggest you go into the store and check out what they have and pick it out in person.

  • While this is a third endorsement for fiesta, it's not casual china.  It's stoneware.  If you want modern, white china check out the Hotel Collection at Macy's.  Fiesta is a bit more retro than what you described, and the Hotel Collection gets great reviews and should meet all of your criteria.  It's bone china.

For something a little more traditional, also check out Gorham Breckenridge at Macy's and Lenox Tin Can Alley.  They are all "real" china but without the metal banding and things that make formal china not microwave safe.

For a more frilly/feminine look, try Mikasa Antique White (also at macys).

Note that if you're looking for legit bone china, you're probably going to be stuck with white.

If you want colors, I vote fiesta - it's stoneware but it's EXTREMELY durable.  They glaze it really well to avoid chips and scratches, and it's made in the USA.

If you don't want to pay as much as bone china costs, Crate & Barrel's porcelain is extremely durable and fits your criteria (other than materials).  Again, you're going to be stuck with white, but the "essentials" collection is extremely inexpensive and modern.  Their Aspen collection is a little more traditional.  Lenox's Aspen White at Macy's is more expensive and is porcelain instead of china, but it really nicely bridges the style gap between modern and traditional in my opinion.

    Hope that helps!

  • I highly recommend Crate and Barrel - durable, lots of styles to choose from, and not too expensive if you want to add more place settings in the future.

Villeroy and Boch is great also. My parents have had their dishes for years. They had one set for maybe ten years and finally upgraded - but still use the original set at their vacation home. Pretty sure Villeroy and Boch is carried at Macys and I know it's at Bloomie's.
  • Thank you for being so incredibly helpful!  I have already found several great ideas.

  • Crate and Barrel has great everyday china
  • I'm registered for Mikasa Antique White as suggested by PP. I had originally intended to register for a typical stoneware in addition to my fine china, but FMIL strongly suggested that I go for a casual china that will last for years. She has had her for many years and all of my SILs have had to replace their stoneware everyday dishes after several years. I think I will be happy with this choice, but only time will tell!

  • We have the Villeroy and Boch Vieux Luxemborg as our everyday china.  I like a lot of the V&B patterns, although ours is not really modern.
  • I'm registering for the Opal Innocence pattern from Lenox. I'm so excited! It's gorgeous, classic (read: white), and it's gotten great reviews. They're dishwasher and microwave-safe, and count as "casual china." Even if you don't get this pattern, you might check out other Lenox patterns, I know Macy's carries them. Good luck! :-)
