August 2012 Weddings

Very long, sorry, August wedding vent

So I'm posting this in this board because only you all know the pressure of what it feels like to know you are getting married in six months. We don't even have our venue finalized yet, and I'm starting to freak. We just got engaged a little over 3 weeks ago, but decided for several reasons that we wanted to get married this summer. It was either this summer or wait an entire year until next summer (Fi in grad school and can't take time off for honeymoon from internship-he's off in the summer- and we want a honeymoon immediately after the wedding). We don't want to move in together until after we get married, and right now we're living 45 min apart. Before we got engaged I was thinking about moving closer to him- about 45 min away (where I used to live, on the other side of the city, where I met him) but now we decided to save money from paying two different rents and just wait to move in together this August (his lease ends Aug 31).  SO August it is! I'm super excited about it but trying to nail down details of the wedding right now has gotten incredibly stressful.

I have a contract pending at a reception place, but I haven't actually seen it yet.  I've gotten referrals from ppl on my local board that had good experiences there, and I've seen photos in their banquet brochure. I've been at the upstairs part of the restaurant before, just never seen the banquet room, which is on the lower level.

What do you think of this menu for a Saturday reception from 1-5:
-fruit/vegetable trays
-cheese/crackers trays
-crab/artichocke dip
-cocktail meatballs
plated lunch options:
chicken ceasar salad, rockfish tacos, angus burger, or pasta fra diavolo

Do you think it sounds cheap or do you think I can get away with that for a Saturday afternoon in the summer? I wouldn't offer a burger if this was an evening reception in some fancy place but this is just a pretty restaurant on the water, which is more "us" and simple. I personally like it but I always get really good, honest advice in here so I'm wondering if I could have some advice as to whether booking this place seems like a good or bad idea. Time just seems to be running out to get this figured out!

We're going on a trip this weekened (leaving early tomorrow morning and coming back late Sunday) so I'm going to have to go see this banquet room one night next week after work or wait until next Saturday if Fi wants to see it. He said to put down the deposit if I like it so we can save the date and he'll see it later. He is not particular like I am about reception venues.

So what do you think of that menu??? Am I SO behind on my planning??? Any advice appreciated....

  • Welcome! First things first, congratulations!

I think you can totally plan your wedding in this amount of time. I've heard of LOTS of people who do it. Just start by focusing on the most important things, i.e. where and when and for how much.

I can't say much about your menu. I'm not really knowledgable about that stuff. I can say if I were invited I would order Rockfish Tacos. :)
  • First of all, take a deep breath!  You'll be fine!

Are you going for a bit more of a fun and relaxed day?  If so, I think your menu sounds delicious and like a lot of fun!

I would certainly say go see the venue as soon as possible.  I think you'll feel a lot more relaxed once you see it and confirm that it is what you want.  Make sure to use the tips and planner from the knot to remember all of the questions you'll want to ask.

  • I agree - relax!  You are not far behind at all!  One bit of advice - you will make things much easier for yourself if you can limit your "pickiness."  So, when you see the reception hall, it may not be the 100% vision of your perfect wedding day, but if it has the essentials and the rough vibe/look you are seeking, go with it.  It will save you from having to research other vendors and time is invaluable!

Your menu selection looks awesome to me and seems to fit the restaurant, the season, and the vibe you're going for.  Once you have that set, it's easy to have the food in place and all you will need to decide is a ceremony site & an officiant and there you will have everything *needed* for a no-frills wedding & reception.  Now if you're traditional you can also look into a photographer, DJ/ceremony music, and a cake baker at this time.  Really, that's only as far as I've gotten (plus ordered dresses last week), so you'll be up to speed in no-time.

  • Ahhh thanks...you ladies ROCK! I appreciate all the feedback (and not just because it was what I wanted to hear lol). I am going to see the venue today. I think I will enjoy myself on our trip this weekend if I at least went and saw the place....Who knows....If I love it I will put a deposit down! The contract is done already and everything. Soooo we will see!!!

Also, thanks for the advice about the "pickiness"....I'm so bad w/ that. I will defniteily apply that advice!! I have an awesome MOH who is excited to help with decorating which makes things really easy! Ok I'm breathing again....thx.

  • Congrats on your engagement!

Planning a wedding in 6 months is kind of a norm for some couples actually, my parents did it, a close friend of my fiance's did it, NOT a big deal for them at all. Nothing happened at their weddings because of limited time, everything was perfect for them.  Now if we were 3 months away I would have to say you need to panic! Wink

It sounds like you already have your mind made up on the venue whether you realize it or not. You already know it is "you" and that is VERY important. Unless there is some weird, severe issue with the venue when you go visit today I would book it. I think you know more about what you want than you are giving yourself credit for! Smile

The food sounds perfect for a wedding in the afternoon. Not too heavy, but not too light where your guests are going to leave hungry. The tacos are a very nice touch. I think you have the right idea on this for sure. I would take a camera today so in case you can't get back there later you will have pictures to remind yourself of what it looks like.

The other stuff is minor, that will fall into place within the next few months. Nothing is more important than the venues.

You are fine on time, no worries. All your planning is for the most important day of your life,  All smiles Laughing

Congrats on your engagement!!  I agree with PPs that your menu sounds fine (and delicious)!!  Concentrate on the big vendors first, then worry about the little things, you have time!!

I booked the venue!!! Went and looked at it and it will definitely work. It doesn't hurt that their prices are VERY reasonable, and the lady who is the coordinator said she loves wedding, she's been doing this for years etc. and she even offered to put together all my centerpieces the day before and everything for me. Soooooooooooooooooooo relieved!!!! And we did make sure the pasta option was vegetarian. So I think all bases are covered!!!!! Thanks for all the motivation....I love TK!

It sounds like things are falling into place already!  Congrats on booking your venue. Six months is definitely enough time to plan a wedding, but two things I would look into right away are choosing your wedding dress (sometimes designer dresses can take over 6 months to come in - or you could by off the rack) and the photographer (as these can sometimes book up quite a few months in advance).  Don't stress, though, you will definitely be able to get everything done!
  • Oh, and your menu sounds absolutely delicious :)

  • Congratualtions on your engagement!

For what it is worth, I think that you are fine!

I was able to plan my entire wedding in 2 months time.  My wedding is in August, but I had everything done within 2 months of my engagement.  You are on the right path!

    Venue
    Officiant
    Reception

Those are the three main things and you are there at this point,  already (kudos to you).

You have got this in the bag!!
