Caribbean Resort- Can I wear my ring in salt water or the pool?

Hi Ladies!

I just had a thought that terrified me. We are going to Jamaica for our Honeymoon and are staying at a nice resort with a private beach and 2 big pools. Is it safe to wear an engagement or wedding ring in the pool or the salt water beach? I would hate to have to take them off everytime we go swimming and I would be afraid to leave them in the room with cleaning staff going in and out... What do you think?

Thanks ladies!!!!!!!!

Re: Caribbean Resort- Can I wear my ring in salt water or the pool?

  • as long as they're real.....................LOL  i've never considered removing them for swimming or any activity besides snorkeling.

and if oyu want to leave them in the room lock them in the safe or (what I do) bring a luggage lock and lock items in your suitcase. would you really leave your rings around in a room where they staff was cleaning? if anything and you have no place to lock them put them on a chain aroudn your neck or in a pouch in your beach bag so that tehy wont get lost but you'll know wheret hey are. and i mean a pouch tied into the inside of your bag so that if it falls over they wont end up in the sand and lost.

as long as they're fitted properly you wont have a problem.

  • I've worn my rings on every trip we've been on without thinking about it.. cruises, Vegas, Fiji, Key West, etc.. and never took them off to go swimming. I also wear them while I'm swimming here at home too. We've both worn our rings parasailing, snorkeling, river tubing, ziplining, etc.. and they look just like they did when we first got them ;)

Just make sure they fit right (won't slip off) and you have them insured. Enjoy!
  • yes, of course you can wear them in the salt water and clorine.  Like pp said, lock them in the safe if you don't feel comfortable.
  • I wore mine on our HM :)

  • The salt water won't do anything to your rings.  If they are gold, the chlorine in the pool can weaken the metal.

    true fact

I did not know this. Good to know.<div>
</div><div>H and I take our rings off when we take a trip down to the beach. We leave them at home or in a safe at the hotel. We do this only because we don't want to loose them. On occasion we have taken our rings off before going swimming.</div>

  • The only time I took my ring off during my HM was when we went snorkeling and the snorkel guide told us that we would see barracudas.  Barracudas sometimes see shiny objects as small prey and I preferred to keep my ring finger rather then have it torn off.

Other then that I wear my ring all the time doing various things.  I typically take it off when I get home from work mainly because my hands are swollen and the ring is starting to sufficate my finger :)

[QUOTE]Swimming in a chlorinated pool isn't going to hurt your rings.  Cleaning the toilet with a high concentration of clorox might.

It WILL weaken gold and make it susceptible to cracks, even if solid.  The high carat, the less damage can be done.  18k is usually okay but I wouldn't chance it. Platinum is usually fine.
  • I wore both mine on our HM (in the ocean and the pool).  I think you should be fine, it's not like you are going to be doing it everyday forever.

If your rings don't slide off when you wash your hands in soap and water, you should be fine while swimming.  If, at any point, they begin to slip, I recommend putting them in your hotel safe.

Someone once gave me the tip to purchase a cheap set of stainless steal or sterling silver wedding bands to take with you on vacation. I'm sure it's safe to expose your ring to the water but I would still be concerned about losing it while away, especially because me and my fiance are fans of water and adventure sports. I feel like I'd rather not deal with the worrying of it possibly getting stolen/lost/washed away at sea or possibly losing the stone. We bought our "vacation rings" at Kohls for $20 each to wear while we're on our honeymoon or for whenever we go away. But I'm just an overly cautious person.

  • If your rings are white gold it can break down the rhodium plating faster which means you just have to get it re-plated sooner. I'm a little bit of a stickler when it comes to my jewelry because I used to work in the jewelry business for a year and a half. Using hand soaps, lotions, etc. will break this down faster. I take my rings off when I wash my hands, shower, put on lotion, go swimming, etc. You still should be able to do it, I just know I couldn't handle it!
