July 2012 Weddings

Hair up vs. Hair Down

I know last month was hair inspiration siggy...but I still have NO IDEA whether I want my hair up or down.

I had always dreamed of having long, curly, princess-esque hair on my wedding day - but I am nervous about my hair "falling", especially since it will be hot and humid in July, so lately I have been looking at some totally pulled up styles.

Are you going to have your hair up, down, or half and half? How did you make your decision? I REALLY don't know which way I want to go here.....and it is a Friday in the office, and I want to chat on the Knot instead of work, so tell me about your hairdos :)

Re: Hair up vs. Hair Down

  • I'm having my hair half up/hald down or all down... I made my decision cause I hate my ears =).

  • Im going for an all up look; either something looser and curly that carrie underwood does, or something more sleek. Idk yet- I'll wait til trial to decide.
I know some people that will down their hair down or half down for the ceremony, and all up for the reception. So if you arm a BM with bobby pins- maybe thats an option. Start wth it half up for the pictures and ceremony.
Does your FI have an opinion? I had a friend last year whose FI really wanted her hair down; cuz thats how she usually wears it, and thought it would be strange to see her with it up.

  • Mine is going to be all up.  I wear my hair down everyday so having it up will feel special.  Also, my hair doesn't hold curls very well so I think that I would look disheveled and messy but the end of the day if it was down.  With all the dancing and moving, I want it off my neck too.
  • I have always been a fan of hair down, but as you said it will be hot and humid in July. I was thinking half-up, but my mom and MOH both think I should pull my hair back with the dress i'm wearing. I will probably wear it pulled back, loose and curly/wavy like pp said.

  • All up.

NJ in the dead of summer is just way too hot to wear my hair down.  I also want to look more formal and my hair is just too long and straight (Brazilian blowouts are my savior) to wear down and look formal.

  • I am wearing my hair up just because of the humidity and heat. I am going to be dying underneath my dress I want to be cool up top.

  • You guys are smart.  I REALLY want my hair down....but I am afraid the worries about frizz, hair falling, sweating, etc. outweigh the prettiness of it.  Time to pin more hair-up photos :)
  • All up, but low. I have very thin hair that doesn't hold curl AT ALL, especially in humidity. And it'll be hot. I never thought for a second about having my hair down.

  • I'm wearing my hair down.
  • I hate the way I look in photos with my hair all up. I feel like my ears stick out and I just don't like it.

My plan is to do half up, with big loose curls and some side bang action. If it falls or gets messy looking after the cocktail hour, I'm pulling it into a low side pony with a cute clip.

  • I want my hair out of my face and pinned up. I hate dealing with my hair - and I just want it secured. Lol.

  • I want mine up, but low. I wear mine up all the time when it's hot, and I want it off my neck! I don't know exactly how I want it, but low and fairly sleek looking, I think.

  • I always wear my hair down and most often hate it when it is up, however, I had the same concern. My hair is thin and would most likely not hold curls very well if left down. I asked my fiance what he would prefer and he said he'd like to see my neck so something up would be nice. I am doing a loose, classy updo that sits near my neck, something similar to these photos that I found hear on TK.

  • Ugh. BUTTERFLY this question stresses me the EFF out. :(

Still trying to figure it out. Had a discussion with our hair lady yesterday wherein I went back and forth about it. I will probably end up with it half up/half down (like my photos I posted a while back) but less "big" and less curly. I think it would match my dress a bit better.

If it looks gross, pony tail it is. :)

  • I'm doing mine mostly down with just the front pulled back because that's how my FI likes it.  He has an archeology degree and loves Greece and Rome the most and loves that style.  My wedding and reception are indoors.  My sister told me about this curling setting spray several years ago that I've used before for formal balls and such and it's the bomb diggity.  They don't make it anymore, but I got it on Amazon for pretty cheap.  It doesn't make your hair stiff, actually makes it more greasy, but it holds.  I'm washing my hair the morning before and not using any conditioner so it won't be as slippery.  I've gone to sleep and woken up to my hair in the same curls.  I doubt it will survive the post-reception dance party at the nightclub, but not much survives how much I sweat when I dance and by that time the pics will all be done so I don't really care and I'll probably stick it up anyway with some sort of pretty clip.  Here's a link to the hair stuff on Amazon:

  • I'm doing half and half. I originally wanted my hair down. I have curly hair (especially when I let it air dry) and I love it so I wanted that look. But I also have really thin hair (my hair, both texture and color, defies most hair laws). It won't hold my veil if it down. I still wanted the curls though so I'm doing half and half!

  • dramaqueen you pretty much described my hair!! I have a lot of hair, and when I let it dry, it is VERY curly on its own...but doesn't always hold artificially added curls (such as with a curling iron well) and my hair is actually incredibly thin.

I am just worried about getting too sweaty and hot....I guess I will just keep pinning away more pictures ;)

Sorry to stress you out bridetobe!!!!! But it is stressing me out because I don't know what to do, so I had to ask, haha!
  • bahahahahahah totally cool.

We have the same hair, too. Naturally curly, I straighten it every day. My stylist tells me it's "fine" rather than "thin" but I have a lot of it. I figure, it'll be nice to have it down in the morning, at the church for the ceremony, then for pictures and if it's HOT then all of my planning wil go away and I'll probably just have her do it up.

I like these photos, if necessary:

  • ahhh that is what my stylist says too! That I have a lot of hair, but that my hair is "fine". I guess that is different from hair that is thinning....

I supposed if i kept it down for ceremony, pictures, and dinner, it wouldn't really matter if I got hot dancing and had to pull it up...this is such a difficult decision!!
  • To complicate matters, fiance prefers my hair up. ugh

  • I'm doing half up half down. I think it's the best of both worlds. I also liked a pp's suggestion of pinning it up after the ceremony and pictures. Maybe your hairstylist could do that?

I originally wanted all up because FI said that's what he liked best and I was worried about being too hot. But then when I showed my FI pics of hair, he only liked half up half down styles. Men are so funny.

Oh and the other day we were watching Breakfast at Tiffany's and he said I should do my hair like this:

    Yep that's a bouffant and...pigtails.
    imageWedding Countdown Ticker
  • What, Meagan, you don't want to wear pigtails on your wedding day!??!!!!

  • Can you believe it?!?!?!

  • I think I'm doing half up and half down curly for the ceremony and pictures, then my cousin that does hair is going to help me put it up for dancing because I know I'm going to be sweating my butt off, especially with how unseasonably warm it's already been this year.

  • I am crazy, but I am going to decide the day of the wedding based on how hot it is.. I want to wear it down, but it will be July and the church has no air.
  • I really want my hair down but its very likely it will be 100 degrees humid in Nebraska for our outdoor ceremony. I have naturally curly hair since I'm part African American it gets frizzy in humidity without a TON of product. I'm getting Mr first Brazilian blowout next month hoping that helps but I'm still nervous. I just haven't seen any up styles I love. I should probably look b4 my hair trial see what my stylist thinks.

</div><div>I also have the same kind of hair. It's very curly/wavy/frizzy, and it gets totally crazy if it gets wet or humid. I have also been told that I have a ton of hair that is just "fine". My hair holds a curl pretty well but I have to straighten it first lol. I'm thinking with the heat and humidity I will be best off using some of my hair's natural texture. This is my current inspiration:</div><div>
