Chinese food

Is there an alternative to sesame chicken or honey chicken? I love them both but I hate thinking about how many calories I am eating when I get it. I think chinese food is my biggest weakness. Any suggestions? TIA!

Chinese food is my absolute FAVORITE! I think I could eat it everyday, but I agree, it is very high in calories. I usually make stir fry at home at least once a week. It's not the same as going out, but it satisfies the craving, and lets me decide how many calories go into it.

Another thing I started doing when ordering chinese from a restaurant is order the sauce on the side. In a lot of cases, the sauce is what really adds the calories. I dip my fork in the sauce, and then get a fork full of the rest. It probably shaves a good chunk of calories off the total.

  • if i do chinese i'll get something off of their "diet foods" section of the menu. this is usually steamed chicken and broccoli, though they have other selections. all are steamed and have the sauce on the side (in allergic to the sauce ingredients anyway). then i get brown rice if i get rice at all.

  • See I have tried the healthy chinese food and I don't like it. They only two things I like on the menu are sesame chicken and honey chicken and I am totally addicted to these two items. I think it is because of the sweet taste. I like the idea of having the sauce on the side. I think I will do that from now on.

  • Make sure you don't get it tempura (fried!). If you get the sauce on the side, with a wok seared chicken (in no or light oil) then it should be a much better alternative :) Also, brown rice instead of white or fried. I know that chinese food is a weakness for me too and, being a WW girl, I'll use my weekly points for it and have a small portion. I don't want to sacrifice for it, so I work it in. HTH!
  • Chinese is my favorite too.

We don't eat often, so I do it up right when we get it. Sigh. Now I'm going to be thinking about chinese food all day long.....

  • I don't know of any "healthy" versions of those two, since they're both fried if I remember right. In a case like that, I would just get a smaller meat portion and a larger brown rice portion. Rice isn't exactly a calorie free option, but it fills you up faster than the chicken and bite for bite is healthier for you.

  • Could you look up the dishes online and see what ingredients you need and then try to recreate it at home, making it a bit better?

I am addicted to Japanese food, but for the sake of my waistline and my wallet I am ldoing the above.
  • I used to only eat sesame chicken until I gained 30 pounds. I only eat the broccoli in brown sauce now but at the beginning I ordered the chicken and broccoli in brown sauce. It is defnitely not the same bc it isn't fried but the brown sauce is sweet too so it wasn't that hard for me.
