How do we line up the bridal party?

I have read both in order of height or order of importance. I'm not interested in trying to decide who is most important to me, in fact the idea is kind of appaling! But if I line them up by height does it go the shortest next to me and then on up? Or the tallest next to me and then down? We have some seriously tall groomsmen and a couple bridesmaids that are super tall too. One of my bridesmaids is actually 6' and I'm 5'2". I will be wearing 4" heels though. I can't believe I never even thought to ask or figure this out yet.

Re: How do we line up the bridal party?

  • I guess I'm not looking for a "rule" on this so much as suggestions for what would look best? Or what makes the most sense. There are just so many people in our wedding party that maybe I should  not worry about it at all but regardless, we have to figure out how to pair the guys and girls and what order for them to walk in.
  • We had the girls get in line according to birth month (a January birthday was at the front of the line, a November birthday was at the back).  The guys did the same. Whoever they were standing next to was who they walked with!

  • We did it based on relationship.  Person we were closest to was the MOH/BM, and it went from there.
  • If you are worried about someone super tall next to you, maybe go in reverse height order so that the tall BM is on the end.

Tricky! If you decide to organize them by height, make sure it`s because this matters to you because it has zero to do with etiquette or tradition. Personally I`d rather go this route than with who is most important to you- because like you, I think it`s kind of appaling!

Most people who do it by height would have the tallest closest to you and then down to the shortest. If you think that this will look best in your photos and you personally are concerned about it- then go with height. If you don`t care at all about this, then in that case- you don`t need to feel obligated to order them by height.
  • It is whatever, and however you want it to be. There are no rules!

  • If you decide to go with height, don't forget to think about their height in shoes! If all your BMs are wearing the same shoe, it's a non-issue, but if some are in flats and others are in 1" heels and another is in 4" heels, it'll make a big difference.
Personally, I'm pairing the BMs up with GMs based on personality.

  • I'm very short, so I had my (also) short MOH next to me and then it went in reverse height order (the little people in the center for once!).  It also just so happened that it coordinated in order of closeness IMO, but I didn't mention that to them.  Then all the guys were around the same height so they just stood in whatever order that matched who they were supposed to walk down the aisle with - which we tried to do based on who they would get along with best, but in reality it doesn't matter because even 2 people who hate each other can suck it up for 30 seconds to walk next to each other.
