I'm sure I'm over-thinking this, so I'm asking for your help!!!!

Sooo my fiance and I love to cook and are trying to register for some good kitchenware. The problem is, I don't know much about cookware and am having a HORRIBLE time deciding what pots and pans to register for! FI's church is throwing us a shower in a couple weeks so people are starting to look at our registry, so I really need to figure out which ones to register for and get it done. Does anyone have any suggestions of which cookware is good? Or even what materials are best, features to look for, etc? Thanks in advance guys! :)

Re: I'm sure I'm over-thinking this, so I'm asking for your help!!!!

  • Oh, and our registry is at Target if that helps at all in suggestions.
  • I had no experience with kitchen brands over here (I'm from England) and H was clueless. I asked his grandfather who said Calphalon (sp?) for pots and pans, and J A Henkels for knives.

That said, one of my friends bought us a non-stick Tefal (T-fal... Americans spell it weird) set that works great. Nothing sticks to those suckers. I've always been a fan of Tefal. It's also a darn site cheaper than Calphalon.

I like non-stick myself... some people swear by stainless steel. It's more personal preference I think - I almost never use the stainless steel one we have because I can't be arsed to scrub it. But, this is also coming from a person who HATES doing dishes.

    Hope this helps :).
  • It does help! I will definitely look into the non-stick Tefal. I REALLY hate doing dishes too lol
  • I have Calphalon cookware, and I absolutely LOVE it.  My mother bought them for us as an early wedding gift, and I love using them.  I enjoy cooking, but didn't do much since the stuff I had was so terrible.  I definitely recommend them.  The stainless steel heats very evenly, and is easy to clean.  You'd almost think you were using nonstick cookware with the ones I have.  The only downside I have found with the stainless steel is that it can discolor pretty easily, but thats an easy fix using either Cameo or Barkeepers Friend.

  • I prefer stainless.  If you use it correctly (preheat, and then use oil or a something liquid in the bottom), nothing sticks, and they last far longer than non-stick.  The lifespan of a non-stick pan in usually only a few years before the coating flakes off and you have to start looking for new stuff.  Honestly I think it's important to have two inexpensive non-stick skillets in different sizes (for eggs, etc or other things that really give stainless trouble), but I look at mine as basically disposable that I can replace without any trouble as soon as I need to.

  • I prefer stainless steel as well.  We registered for an All-Clad set.  The 3 brands on here I see over and over are All-Clad, Calphalon, and le creuset.  I agree with PP, invest in something that's going to last.

  • I love our new stainless. I was getting discolored but I discovered bar keepers friend and now they look brand new. We also got a cast iron skillet or eggs and things. I agree on not balking from quality pieces. You have to think about how long they last compared to a cheap brand. I have emeril so it's great quality but not top tier

  • thanks so much everyone! This has been incredibly helpful!

  • One thing to point out is that copper is the best conductor of heat - it keeps it consistent and even throughout the pan. So if you and your FI are pretty serious about cooking, I'd recommend looking into that type of pan... though Target probably won't have that.  FI and I personally registered for the copper-core All-Clad set because we already have the basics.

If you're looking for something more "basic" (as in - high quality but not top-of-the-line) I would also recommend stainless steel. Non-stick pans can be great, but I don't think they have the longevity of S/S. So, maybe ask for one or two pans with non-stick (say, an 8" saute pan for omelettes or something).
Also, fall in love with cast iron pans! You'll be amazed!

  • I was pretty unimpressed by Target's selection of pots and pans...especially after seeing MUCH higher quality items at BBB.

Are you doing more than one registry?

  • Enameled bakeware is fan-freaking-tastic. I have Emile Henry, Le Creuset as well as a "no-name" one from Canadian Tire. All are fab - they bake evenly and are so easy to clean.
