What do you think of this idea for centerpieces?

I've always dreamed of a vintage wedding with zoot suits. I finally get to have it this May. My problem with this idea is that my fiance is very OCD about symmetry and equal numbers (if that makes sense). He has also been raised with the notion that everything worth anything is better than used or old. This is a dilema with a vintage weding. We are doing black and cream for our colors with red roses. He would like a single red rose for centerpieces. That's classy but average and I want charm and character. He's pretty easy going with whatever I want and has some faith in my taste so he's agreed to go with my idea of lanterns as centerpieces. I've been hitting second hand stores and have found some really neat lanterns. None of them match and all have a uniqueness that I think will be great conversation pieces. The downfall to this is we can't have candles which i think these would classify as. I will have to use battery operared flicker candles instead. What do you think of the lantern idea? Any suggestions on the votives?

  • I think flicker candles would be fine. They still give off a soft light, even if it's not exactly like a candle. Could you include a red rose with the lanterns in some way? I don't have any suggestions, just throwing it out there.

  • I like the idea, even with the battery operated lights. I'm all for something unique since i'm not a bit flower girl myself.
  • regarding the battery operated lights--I bought some online here (those little led tea lights) and they're complete junk.  I'd test them out in person first, if I were you.  :)

The red rose idea is really cool, I think, and the lanterns sound great!

  • What about just using rose petals scattered around the lanterns? Just an idea. I used battery operated votives in my pumpkins last halloween, they worked pretty well but I had to use a few to make them really bright. I bought them at Target or walmart.
