formal vs informal, dress length

We're having an afternoon wedding and I know afternoon weddings are typically less formal. When I told my mom that I'd like my BMs to wear long dresses she was surprised.

The wedding is in the middle of March in Ohio...there's no telling what the weather will be like . The style that we're going for is timeless, elegant, and a tiny bit vintage.

What do you think?

I think it's totally up to you and your BMs. If it's a pretty casual wedding, I'd maybe go with something more simple as opposed to a ball gown type dress, but that's just me.

I agree with Sleeper- you can do whatever you want really. My wedding is in Pittsburgh and the ceremony is in the afternoon but the reception is in the evening. My BMs are wearing cocktail length dresses and the groomsmen are wearing tuxes with bow ties- so its still formal if you make it formal. While long dresses might seem more formal, they don't have to be if you go easy on jewelry or other aspects of your decor/groomsmen attire/etc.

You can find BM dresses that are floor length, but less formal looking. I think a flow-y chiffon dress would be nice for an outdoor afternoon wedding, where a satin ballgown would be too formal looking. Fabric and cut make a difference too, not just length. Ultimately, go with what you want though.
