Honeymoon Registries... what do you think?

I have found and heard about these honeymoon registries...
We have a place and most of the things we need so we were going to just ask people not to bring gifts until i was talking to my future sis in law and she said she had a friend who did Honeymoon registries???
What do you think??
Is it tacky? or not right??
I'm not sure.. I lile the idea much better than people getting us stuff we don't need....

Seriously, at least once a week.
  • I find them to be rude.  It is a round about way of asking for money and is deceptive to guests.

Most of the "excursions" people are paying for you to do,  the honeymoon registry company just sends you $ to do on your own (or not do).

People will already give cash if they want to.

AND most of the honeymoon registries take a % off the top of what you are given.

Both of those sites charge you and/or your guest just to use that site.

Do you know what the cost of passing it around through word of mouth that your saving up for a honeymoon? Free!

If you use either of these sites you will actually get less money from your guests than if you just didn't register and told people, "We didnt' register for anything, but we are saving up to travel to X."

  • Ditt PPs.  HM registries are equivalent to asking for cash, which is rude.  So I would suggest not doing one.  If you already have everything you need for your home, you can either do a small registry or no registry at all and tell people that you are just saving up for xyz if they ask.  People will get the hint. =)
  • I wasn't thinking of it as being the same as "cash" but i guess your right IM SORRY for posting..
But just the same it feels wrong to ask for gifts or specific items - money etc.. its all the same to me..

If it's all the same to you... and it feels wrong to ask for specific items, then why does asking for cash feel better to you?

Like, if it feels wrong to you to ask for gifts, then why does cash feel like a better option? I'm honestly curious and not trying to rile you up. A few brides (and grooms!) have said that and I never had the chance to ask before.

  • It doesn't feel better but as i'm being told from friends and family that you should have a registry.. so why not put it toward something i want and will use?
Thats all.. doesn't mean i feel its any better or more right..
  • If you have a small registry (anything you need to upgrade?), people will take the hint and give cash, if they weren't already planning to do so.  If you're not comfortable registering, you don't need to. If people ask you where you're registered, say you're saving for your honeymoon/a house/a pony.  Some people aren't comfortable giving cash and like to give physical gifts, so your chances of ending up with random stuff are higher if you don't register for boxed gifts at all.

Gift registries are different because if someone wants to buy you something you'll love and use for years to come, they could guess at what you want (what color, what brand, how many, etc.), or they could look at your registry to get you the teapot that goes with your china pattern that you picked out (just an example).  With cash, you don't tell people how much you want; people know cash is always a welcome gift.  And you never tell people about any kind of registry unless they ask or seek out the information.
  • I don't like honeymoon registries because, as much as I want a couple to have a great HM, I don't want it to be on my dime.  What I do want is something that is more useful than a couple days in Mexico (or where ever the HM is).

You don't have to be sorry, you are new and it took me awhile to start learning some things on TK.  Just look around at subjects (you can you use a search as well) before posting a question.

TK is very helpful and can really help a bride out because there are so many girls that help out with advice on here.  The problem is if we are putting the effort into giving advice others we hope that other's will look before posting.

  • OMG please just read the sticky at the top of the page...or read one of the two dozen other posts asking the same question.  They are a bad idea and the company will charge your guests a surcharge.  Bad idea.

  • Personally, I disagree with many Knotties and think they're a great idea. Yes, they charge your guests, but if guests pay for regular gifts, they'll be charged taxes and most likely shipping if they shop online. Some of the registries don't charge as much. We're planning to use our Honeymoon Pixie registry to actually buy the gifts guests wanted to purchase for us, so it doesn't seem that different from a regular registry to us!
  • I really don't think a honeymoon registry is appropriate.  A vacation is something you take if you can afford to do yourself by your own means.  Most resorts now a days (at least the one that we are staying at ) does not require any money down, just a credit card to hold the reservation.  Because of this we will use the money we are given at the wedding to pay for the resort upon check out.  We still have to come up with money for flights but I am putting anything over 1,000 I get toward the flights, we will put money aside, and my dad and grandmother have said they will give us our wedding present money before the wedding at any point (of course we didn't bring this up! They just mentioned it!) so we will use that money toward the flights.

For me, some of my family members haven't been able to afford vacations since I was under 10 years old so I would think it is so rude to ask them to pay for our vacation.  I guess it all just depends on your circle.  Also be careful what registry site you use.  I have heard that in the end even if you don't get money for everything or a certain percentage you have to pay for the rest yourself.
