Most Shocking Expense?

Between invitation postage, thank you card postage for the shower, and thank you card postage for the wedding, I spent well over $500!  That is probably my most shocking expense.

What's the most shocking way you have spent wedding money so far?

Re: Most Shocking Expense?

  • Hmm....mine is probably the cocktail tables I ordered. I though it was like 100-150 nope almost 300. Totally was a surprise to me.

My chairs! they are $8 pp!!Also, probably the invites. I thought we could get away with spending 2-3$ per invite. I am sure if I did a less elaborate design or a print your own from Michael's we could have, but they didn't have any I liked.

I am having invites custom designed and we are paying close to $6 pp. However, hwen I thought about it, when you buy a nice halmark card you spend close to $4 and its not personalized!

  • We haven't spent it, but we might add a videographer later, and I've been totally shocked at the prices--even to only have the ceremony on video!  I'm hoping we come under budget on some other things and can add a videographer at the last minute.

  • Stamps! It hurt to spend a couple hundred at the post office lol.

  • Chairs for my outdoor ceremony have been my most shocking expense.  It kills me that we are spending almost $1000 renting chairs that people will sit on for 15-20 minutes!
  • Transportation for the guests has turned out to be the most surprising.  The hotel and venue are 5 miles apart and I was getting some outrageous quotes.

This may make me sound ignorant of typical pricing, but my most shocking expense is a tie between flowers and cake. I really had no idea they would be so expensive...

  • The photo booth, we have a discount and it is still around $900. And the photographer, I had no idea how much they cost. Most of the other stuff actually ended up being less than what I expected

  • I would have to say my flowers has been the most shocking expensive thus far.

  • Oddly, I think it will be my dress- I had not realized that alterations could easily be as much as my dress (got it on sale for $449, originally $1250.) It's not the worst possible amount to pay for the dress, it should still be under a thousand. And I know lots of people expect the dress to cost quite a bit. But still, it's a bit of an ouch on a tight budget.

<div>Yes!  Our cake was included in the venue, but somehow we managed to add $800 worth of icing.  Ridiculous, I know, but I just had to get the cake I wanted.</div><div>
</div><div>I know the cake won't matter too much years from now, but the money probably won't either if it's spent on random things like clothes or dinners.</div>
  • that a fake cake will cost us more than a real cake!  I guess its a teal cake then to get. Stamps definately add to the pain.

  • Nothing yet...the flowers were almost a shock as the initial quote was for $1200 (trying for a budget wedding here) but after really narrowing down what we could do ourselves and what we didn't need, we are now at $430 for flowers.  I'm expecting we'll really get hit closer to the wedding date with stuff like hotel room costs, decorations, alcohol, etc. once we really know our final quest count.

  • ummmm, can I say EVERYTHING? lol I was SO clueless how much wedding vendors cost and how many little things would add up. My budget has almost doubled and I am having a "casual" BBQ food wedding!

Stamps were for sure a surprise - agree w/ pp's!

    Photographer....ouch!

& yes... alterations! I havn't got a quote yet... but with the amount of things I need changed, and the fact that the dress is head-to-toe beading... I know it's going to be over $350, probably closer to $500!

Okay, ewww... I'm done thinking about this stuff! lol

  • I haven't gotten my alterations quote yet, but I'm sure that'll be a shocker!

Stamps were a huge shock, when FI did the math I nearly gagged on the water I was drinking (he's usually the frugal one lol) and we both reconsidered providing stamps on the RSVP envelopes, but then we calmed down and kept with "etiquette" to provide the stamps lol.

Photography was a HUGE surprise, but we had someone offer to do it as a gift to us.
DJ was a surprise too, I wish I had a turntable/equipment so I could go make hundreds of dollars a night!!!

I think all together btwn save the date, invitations, menus, stamps, escort cards and table numbers (oh and tags for our favor boxes) has shocked me the most- I would say how much, but I'm afraid I'll get chest pain. I mean-it's only paper.

  • The rental items, we are having an outdoor wedding at FI's parents house. They are on a few acres so we need ceremoney items, and reception items including tent, chairs, tables, linens etc. This is more than half my budget!

  • I don't know about anyone else but finding  the DJ was the most outrageous quotes I got. I called at least 20 different vendors (people out of their home, big name compaies I found at a bridal expo, reccomendation from friends etc.). More than once I got quotes for $2400!!! I'm a DIY bride on a budget and I want everyone to have an awesometime but they are clicking buttons on a laptop!!! It's not like it is live music! That is my exspensive rant :)

Exactly!  We got outrageous quotes too (my FI had no idea about DJ costs) the cheapest we found was $500 for 5 hours (but it was a student my Mom works with at my old high school, and FI wasn't thrilled with the idea of having a teen DJ.. Not to mention we had to feed him and pay extra for him to travel, because he was moving to go to college).  We ended up negotiating with a DJ to get 5 hours for $700 (and our deposit was included).

I agree with the photo booth... although right now we've decided to forgo the expense and see if we can squeeze it in later.
  • Flowers by far. I mean, come on now. They die anyway, why are they so dang expensive??
