How did you meet?

Curious how people met their FI? We were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. We both thought we would just meet for a quick drink, FI says he was planning on spending 15 minutes at the bar, we ended up there for about 2 hours. 6.5 months later we were engaged.

  • He is my friends brother
  • We met in college.  Six years later we were in a more stable place in our lives so we were able to (finally) get engaged.

We met in an online dating chat room 13 years ago....we went to the same college, we have dated on and off since.  I moved to MN 5 years ago and the rest was history!

  • We worked for the same company at different locations, knew who each other were but had never actually met until a mutual friend/coworker got us together. Two months later we were living together and a couple months after that we were talking about getting married but before he even had a chance to propose we found out I was prego. We got engaged a little after that but decided to put the wedding planning off until after the baby was born and we were more settled.

  • Ours of a bit of a long, twisted, story.... We met, completely platonically around 1999 when I was dating a friend of his, G. G and I went on to date for the next five years, then had a very bad breakup. Toward the end G and I and a few other friends, including FI, bought tickets to a concert to see my favorite band... G ended up not going, but I did and FI and I totally hit it off. We exchanged phone numbers and went on a few dates, but G did not like that so we broke it off. Five years later, G passed away. FI and I reconnected at the funeral and have been together ever since.

  • We met at my old work. After seeing him on a daily basis for 3yrs as a customer at my work he finally started asking me out. He kept giving me his # and telling me to call him but I never did lol. Finally I yelled at him over the intercom to call me and completely embarrassed him in front of a ton of people. He came back and got my # and called me that night. We've been together for almost 5yrs and inseparable ever since.
  • We met at a bar- exchanged numbers and kept hanging out at that bar until I was finally over my ex and ready to date again- he stuck around and waited 2/3 months until I decided I was ready to date again. Had our first date and became inseperatable  ever since :)

  • We met on eHarmony.

Went to the same college, had the same professors and same major, overlapped one year but had no idea the other one existed. Then we graduated and both moved to the same city for jobs.

After we both had our careers settled was when we met. He was tired of meeting girls in bars so decided to give eHarmony a try and I was simply trying to meet someone in the area. Both of us have similar dating backgrounds so it made it pretty easy.

Our first date was interesting to say the least. That was 3 years ago Laughing
  • This sounds bad, but we actually met because I was dating his roommate in college.  He was in a three-year relationship at that point as well.  We became friends, and two years after meeting (long after his roommate and I had split up and his girlfriend and him had split up) we started dating.  Our first weekend trip together was at Devils Lake State Park. Two years after our first trip to Devil's Lake, we retuned and he proposed!
  • We met at Boy Scout Camp in 2006 and got together the following summer. We dated long distance for about 2.5 years and then moved in together, adopted some cats, bought- and then sold- a junky but beloved jeep, moved back to our hometown last summer and got engaged (all in the span of eight days!) It's been a fun and unlikelyride for both of us- Boy Scout camp is not exactly known for being a hotbed of singles action but THREE couples got engaged there last summer!

  • FI and I actually met in middle school- I saw him sing in the 5th grade talent show and I thought he was so cute.  Fast forward to high school, we were friends (more like acquaintances, but whatever) and we were both in the musical together.  We grew close throughout the weeks of rehearsals, and opening night he asked me out.  9 years later and we are (finally!) getting married!

  • I met my fiance when I bought/won him at a charity fire fighter bachelor auction :)  Yes, drinks were involved, he was so cute and a great dancer!  We hung out the next night for a bit, then he made me dinner the following night, a month later we took a trip to Hawaii, and 9 months to the day that I "bought" him, he proposed.  Sounds like a made for TV movie, lol.
  • My fianc and I are both police officers and met while working the beat :
  • We met at weekly running workouts held by a local triathlon club.  I started going in July, and was dating someone for the past 3yrs, but it was falling apart. He was also dating someone for a few months, but it was fizzling.  He would say hi, but that's about it until winter when we started going to dinner after our runs in a smaller group of 4-6 people.  He later told me he thought I was younger than I was which was why he didn't pursue anything until he got to hear me talk with the group and realized I had to be older than he thought.  (We're 7 yrs apart, but he thought it may have been more like 10-15).

He invited anyone from our group to go snowshoeing one weekend and for whatever reason (I hate cold weather) I said I would go.  It was just us.  I made it clear I was not looking for a relationship, and he said that was fine.  But we went again, and then out to dinner.  I seriously convinced myself we were friends & was lying to myself too!  Then he invited me on a ski trip with his skydiving club and I found myself saying yes.  On that trip he made a move & kissed me.  I had a billion thoughts run through my head like, "no, no - we're friends & I can't do this, I'm not ready, etc" but then I realized I did like him and I let it happen.  That was over 2 years ago.  Best decision ever.

We met freshman year in high-school through a mutual friend. I had a crush on him, not that he knew. When I told my "best friend" she said she didn't think he was attractive. The next day they showed up to school holding hands and said they were BF & GF (how high-school, right? lol). They dated for 3 years and me and FI actually hated each other (I thought he was too uptight and he thought I was a b*tch- which to be fair...both were true at the time lol). my "best friend" cheated on him and was trying to use me to help do it (by lying and saying she was at my house and she would want me to lie and say she was in the bathroom or whatever if he called). Although me and FI didn't exactly get along I thought he was a good guy who didn't deserve what she was doing to him. I ended up telling him and they broke up and she stopped talking to me. FI called me really upset about missing her and knew I would understand since I had just lost her too. I almost hung up on him when he called cause we wern't friends and it was hassle to talk to somebody I didn't like (like I said...I was a b*tch lol) My brother convinced me to stay on the line and we ended up talking every night for the next couple of months until we finally confessed feelings for each other :)

It's now been 8 years since and my 'ex besfriend' and I made up a few years ago (and FI and her don't have any hard feeling anymore)and she will be attending our wedding with her FI. Funny how things works out

  • My story is kind of twisted, my fi is one of my friends ex brother in laws... we met when i was still in highschool. He was married with 3 kids and not gunna lie I thought he was hot, well obviously he was off the market, and I had been dating this other guy for 4 years and we were engaged to be married, i called off the engagement met a real jerk...i mean prince, who was in the army and was deployed the day after we got married. We lasted 4 months after he got home from his deployment(we was mentally abusive) and my at the time secretary helped me leave him one night after work (i was about 3 months pregnant at the time)

Fi and I were friends on Facebook and he would talk to me about keeping me head up through the tough times and he gave me his number in case i ever needed a shoulder to cry on, I thought this was really weird as he was married, had a family and was happy, (or so i thought) till one night we were texting and he told me that his wife and him were getting a divorce after 8 years of marriage, she was only faithful to him for 3 of those years....he stayed with her and forgave her trying to be the bigger, christian man and make there relationship work, they did counseling the whole nine yards, and she finally came out and said she wanted a divorce.

We got went out one night and just drove around town talking, and the rest is history. He was even there for my daughters birth, which ment the world to me!! :)

  • I just love reading all of these stories about how everyone met :)
  • We met a month into our freshman year of college. He went to lunch with a friend from his dorm, who was friends with myself and the girl I was going to lunch with. We sat across a round table from each other and he tried to make awkward conversation with me. It was loud in the dining hall and he's quiet so I couldn't really hear him and just wanted him to stop talking to me, lol. I didn't think I would ever see him again, and honestly, was fine with it, but that night he messaged me on facebook and we started talking, and I was hooked. A week after we met he asked me "out,", and 2 days after that he met my parents heh (they already had plans to visit that weekend), and a week later we shared our first kiss.

Almost four years and a semester apart for study abroad, living together and the adventures of college later, we were engaged. And I can't wait to marry him :)

  • I lived in an apartment by myself.  The complex decided to completely replace the pool in the summer, so I went to my (guy) friends apartment to hang out at his pool.  He and I and another friend were having drinks and chatting in the pool, and a couple of guys were doing the same nearby.  One of them caught wind of our conversation about my friend's floating beer pong table, and he introduced himself and his friend to us.  I thought the guy's friend was cute, and we found out he was also my friend's neighbor.

The group of us hung out together over the next few weeks, and one night at my friend's house, I stole FI's phone while he was in the bathroom and put my number in it.  Later that night, I went to leave, and he walked me to my car and kissed me!

  • First I'd like to say, WOW these are some AMAZING stories!!

FI and I met because of a vacuum (seriously).

My friend (B) was having a birthday party at Pines (apt. complex), and I was actually crushing on another guy (J) at the time and had invited him to the party (with B's permission of course, she thought he was cute lol).  FI was bored that night, and had used to live in the apt across the hall from B (they were friends), and went to borrow a vacuum from that apt.  He decided to visit B because he hadn't seen her in awhile, he came in and we started flirting and talking.  A few other friends showed up and we decided to make a dinner, FI and our friend C went back to FI's new apt to get "spices" (he came back clean shaven, contacts in, dressed nicer, and had on cologne).  While he was gone J showed up and he and I were showing our friends how to swing dance (a shared hobby of ours).  When FI and C got back we made dinner (I didn't eat much, too nervous lol).  Afterwards we decided to play truth or dare/spin the bottle (dorky yes, immature probably, but it was fun and exciting, NO ALCOHOL was involved).  FI patted the floor next to him, I sat down and J sat on my other side.  After awhile, FI spun the bottle and it landed on me, B dared him to kiss me (he did, and WOW sparks flew).  I spun and it landed on J, C dared me to kiss him (no sparks at all).  Awhile later J spun and it landed on B, C dared him to kiss her and they TOTALLY made out!!  Anyway, after everyone left, FI and I sat on the couch talking (for most of the night actually) and exchanged phone numbers.  The next day I had to go back home (I lived 1.5 hours away), but before I left I went to FI's apartment and we talked about what could happen between us.  We decided to try the long distance thing, and promised this wouldn't be the last time we saw each other. We probably talked for 4 hours that evening (our phones went dead which was why we stopped talking), and have talked everyday since then!!

2 weeks later (I worked every other weekend), FI made the drive to my parents house (I lived with my parents yes.. College was a 30 minute drive, and they actually LOVED having me home), and after meeting my parents for the first time he took me on our first date to A&W!

So FI and I really DID meet because of a vacuum, he actually grabbed it on his way home after the party ended and we said goodnight!  If he hadn't decided to clean, we probably wouldn't have met!!

  • All of your stories are soooo sweet!!

I had just moved to AZ had literally no friends so I devoted my life to work, as a side job I was even doing some caregiving, saving money up for the cause of having money! Anyway, I was appointed to work for this sweet 94 year old homebound lady, she lived with her daughter. Being that I was new to the area and had no friends it was very convienient.. to say the least that she had a 22-year-old Grandson that happened to be newly single. That guy's mom was over one day and asked for my phone number and she was going to give my number to her son... he texted me later that night and after almost cancelling our date I am glad that I didn't because it was easily the best date of my life and I am so happy that we are getting so close to our wedding. AND that our match maker Great Grandma Myrtle is still here and she will be attending our wedding. :)

    I can not wait.

  • jmleejohnson - - -love love love you story!  so glad grandmom will be there for your big day!

FI and I met on Match.com.  He swears we owe it all to them lol
  • jmleejohnson  LOVE your story, SO cute!

punkyalicia  - we met on eHarmony and my FI says the same LOL! We actually joked around on our first date that eHarmony had been secretly stalking us our whole lives until our date, so creepy how much we were alike!
  • FI and I met when I was in college and my best friend was dating his best friend.  FI says he loved me right from the beginning but for whatever reason, never asked me out.  We were friends and he even set me up with another guy in the group, which didn't work out.  Eventually he made a move and I figured why not give it a try.  We dated awhile while I was in college, broke up, a little after college, broke up, took some time to do some growing up and growing as people.  Then I was just out of a 3 yr relationship and he told me he wanted us to be together.  I wasn't ready and told him so.  He waited around a few months until I realized I was ready to move on and in love with him!  We moved in together 3 months later and got engaged 3 months after that.  We've known eachother almost a decade and still are learning about each other.  It's not always easy, being two stubborn independent people, but I wouldn't change our story for the world!

    Hahaha! I love this.

My FI and I met on a blind date. FI's sister and and my cousin set us up. We met for drinks and talked for hours. Neither of us really expected to find "the one" going into the first date, but we totally hit it off. We went on a second date a few days later, and I swear I had a gut instict (nothing rational, just a feeling) that we'd get married.
  • My fiance and I met 12 years ago, when I transfered to the same National Guard unit he had just transfered to (he had just come off of active duty). He was at the time seeing someone and I was in a serious relationship of what I then thought of the love of my life (I was very young). We were friends and comrades but the thought of ever dating would have never even occurred to me back than. Life happened, we both moved away. He got married, deployed, and divorced within a short time. I left for grad school, broke up with my boyfriend when we both realized that we were growing up, but not together.
Three years ago, we met again at a mutual friend's party, neither one of us being in the mood for a relationship, and just started hanging out......the rest is history.
Today I thank the Lord on a daily basis that he brought this amazing man back into my life, and I cannot imagine ever being without him again. He IS the love of my life.

  • We met at a mutual friend's birthday party (almost).  He saw me sitting next to a guy friend at the party and he thought I was there with the guy.  He asked the mutual friend the next day if I was there with the guy I was sitting next to that night.  When the mutual friend told him that the guy I was sitting next to was just a friend, he asked the mutual friend if he would call me and give me his phone number.  I took a chance, which is so NOT like me, and I gave him a call the next day.  We hit it off from the very beginning!  That was back in November 2010, and now we will be getting married in just 4 months!  It pays to get out of your comfort zone sometime.  Wink
