Help me with size....

So FI and I are going to make this:

He's going to cut the wood in the next couple of weeks while it's still cold out and the wood is dormant, but I'm having troubles telling him what size he should get for the round part that the cake will actually sit on. I know I should know exactly what size, but we're not sure when we'll be able to go to a bakery and figure that out and the wood needs to be cut really soon. Sooo... what size would you recommend for the round part? Here's some cakes that I'm liking:

It only needs to serve about 85 so it won't be a huge cake. Maybe 2 or 3 tiers depending on price. What do you guys think size wise?

Re: Help me with size....

  • I'd like to say that cake stand is super cute!

In the picture, it looked like the cake stand was significantly bigger than the cake, right? So it doesn't have to be an exact match.

I found this LINK that shows different cake sizes per guest. With 85 guests, she reccomends a pan size of 16 inches, so I would go with maybe 20? (I tend to over-estimate though)

<div>Oh wow! Thanks! Yeah, I didn't want it to necessarily be that much bigger than the cake, but I guess I'd rather it be too big than too small, right? I think I'll have him cut an 18" and a 20" if possible. Just to be safe... =) But thanks! I wasn't even sure where to start. </div>
  • No prob! Sounds good to have two different sizes- and you could probably use them afterwards for super cute Christmas cookie platters or something!

  • My bottom tier is 15 inches, so our baker told us to buy a stand that is 18 inches.  They go 6,9,12,15 and our stand to be 18.  I think we may go a little bigger though.
  • I agree with PP that even if it comes out a little too big, it will probably look even better! I love the idea and I think its so great that you guys are making it together. Its those kind of touches that will make your wedding special. Good luck -- post pictures when youre done! :)
