  I was married May 21st of last year and its gorgeous in Mexico that time of year We HM'd in Riviera Maya which is almost right between the 2 cities you have listed. About 30 mins from Playa and 40 from Cancun. All 3 cities are fabulous - Cancun and Playa are main attrations with lots of restaurants, shopping, and tourists. Riviera Maya is very low key and is more of a spot to focus on if you arent interested in the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities.

  riviera maya runs from cancun all the way south to pretty much the belize border.
  
  i've been to both many times. they both have their pros and cons. both have great restaurants, shopping etc... pdc is a bit more beachy but cancun is a touch more urban. they both share the same excursions all over riviera maya and into the interior of the area.

  Hey! You're wedding date is they day after mine
  I have been to both Cancun and a Riviera Mayaat Sandos Eco report right near Playa del Carmen. If you want designer shopping and plan to go out to party alot at night, than Cancun is probably where you want to be. Personally, it was a bit too urban for us and we are not super into the nightlife.
  
  We much preferred the resort near Playa del Carmen and walking around the small city. The resort was quieter than Cancun and alot more natural. Playa seemed at least a little less commercial.
  
  You also might want to look into Isla Mujeres. It's a small island reachable by ferry from Cancun. We stayed out there at the Avalon Reef Club and loved it. We only had 3 days there and unfortunately, it rained for all 3, but we still had a great time. This resort is on a little islet all it's own.

  Thanks ladies! We were thinking of staying at a Palace Resort (Sun Palace-Cancun or Playacar Palace-Riviera Maya). Any experience with these?

  Dh and I just stayed at the Sun Palace in Cancun this past February.  We really liked it a lot.  They had a promotion going where they gave us a $1500 credit for nothing and we were able to use it in the spa, for pics, and for excursions.  The hotel is really nice, clean, and spacious.  I've never stayed at such a nice place.  The food was pretty good, nothing really special.  The beach is gorgeous and the pools are nice.  You can also go to any other of the Palace Resorts and have breakfast, lunch or dinner for free.  We checked out a couple of the other resorts.

  We are going there for our HM! I guess I've never been there but I can't offer any advice... but I've been to Cancun a couple of times and while it is BEAUTIFUL it can be kind of touristy and a big time party scene. I love it for what it is, but I feel like it would be a weird HM.

  It was a fairytale.
