DIY flower ?

I am doing my own centerpieces. They will be carnation flower balls. My ? is I have researched on how to do it and my FSIL has done it a lot but she is a bit busy and when I did see her I forgot to ask her, do i have to use floral balls or will styrofoam balls do the trick? We are assembling them the day before the wedding. Im not sure since its styrofoam if they will dry out and wilt early? floral balls I need are 5.99 and I need 14. A lot more then I am wanting to spend. Does anyone know the answer?

    I used coupons on the floral balls.  Are they real carnations?  If so, I would use the floral balls.

    Yeah, floral balls would probably be the best way to go. 

    I have carnation balls that I am using but they were silk flowers that are glued on.

    I am DIYing the rest of my flowers that are going in vases.  The florist is giving them to me in a bucket of water and plant food.  I am picking them up 4 days before the wedding so they will have enough time to open and for me to trim them.

    Floral balls would be best so that the flowers stay hydrated well overnight and til the next day. Granted carnations aren't delicate flowers and can take a good beating, but they can still begin to slightly wilt and brown without water for too long. And you don't want that. When I made my rose ball in class, the roses looked perfect the next day because the floral ball was soaked really well before starting. Sorry that's not what you were hoping for :

    I'd go with the floral balls too. Hopefully you have LOTS of people to help...I made 6 with silk flowers and styrofoam, and it took me FOREVER!!! Had to spread it out over multiple sessions, but poking into floral balls is probably easier than styrofoam, too.
