post neuter/spay question for dog owners

FI and I had our dog neutered yesterday and we are trying to figure out the best way to set up his food and water bowls so he can easily and comfortably eat and drink out of them.  He's still getting used to his e-collar so last night and this morning we held the bowls right up to his face so he could eat and drink, but I don't want to make that a habit for the next 10-12 days.  I noticed when we went ouside this morning he brought his head and face all the way to the ground to sniff around for a good spot to do his business so would putting his bowls directly on the floor be the best?  Right now I have them up on a cardboard box so they are pretty much right at his face level but he's sleeping so I don't know if it will work for him or not.  Any input on what others have done to make the eating/drinking process easier while wearing the e-collar would be great.  Thanks!

</div><div>Why dont you just take it off when its meal time?  The cone thing is only to prevent him from licking the area and getting it infected.  Just keep a close eye on him when its off.

I'd try this too, but only if you are standing watch & can make sure that he doesn't start to lick himself and that he will allow you to put it back on. My one cat would go nuts as soon as I took it off, so I had to leave it on & she figured out how to put the cone flat on the floor & eat anyway.

This is mostly why I can't take it off.  He's been trying to get to his surgery site all last night and this morning even with the e-collar on, so I know if the collar comes off we are in trouble.  Also he's really weird about eating (and has always been like this) where he will eat a few bites, then go sleep or play with his toys and then go back to his food then back to sleep or playing, etc.  We only leave his food out for 30 minutes but he manages to take that entire half hour to eat so it's easier for me if it's just left on him so I don't need to spend a full half hour watching him like a hawk.  I ended up moving both bowls to the floor and he's able to drink with ease, so I think it's the best solution.  Thanks everyone!

We took ours off our dog so he could eat and drink as well. Granted, our dog only wore his for like two days. He had zero interest in his incision and stitches and left them alone.

Edited because I just saw your update: You could set the bowls up on something, like an upturned terra cotta pot or something, so that the cone goes around the bowls and supporting structure holding them off the floor and he can lower his face down to them.

  • Yeah, my dog was obsessed with his incision, so he just put his cone flat on the floor to eat. It was pretty comical.
  • is he wearing the plastic one from the vet? Petco and Petsmart sell smaller softsided and inflatable ones that allow for more movement/freedom but still prevent him from getting at the stitches.
