Registering for dishes?

Hey ladies, I had asked a question about dinnerware dish brand recommendations on my local board and I thought that this information was very helpful (especially if you're like me and have no idea where to start with the mass amount of choices on dishes):

"What dinnerware is made of usually determines how easily it will chip. Earthenware chips the easiest and is very porous, so it's not a good idea to soak earthenware dishes in a sink full of water. Usually, earthenware is glazed, and darker in color. The next step up is stoneware, which is fired at a higher temperature than earthenware, making it more durable and chip resistant. Porcelain is even more durable than earthenware or stoneware. Stoneware is usually more creamy in color, whereas porcelain is more of a stark white color. Next in line for durability is fine china, and bone china is the most durable.

We didn't register for fine china, because we will probably never use it, and we just don't have room to store it for future use. We registered for porcelain dinnerware at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, because we want it to last for a long time, and the earthenware we already have chipped after only using it a couple of times.

If you check the descriptions of dinnerware, it should tell you what it is made of, and this should help you determine the quality. I hope this helps!"

Interesting.... makes me wonder if we picked the right thing now. Probably doesn't matter anyway, no one will buy them for us. They were just kind of a "oh wth, lets just scan it and see" type thing.

    Thanks for that!
  • I didn't even pay attention to what our dishes are made of... (just looked it up! They are porcelain). Fiance was weirdly picky about dishes so finding something that he liked sealed the deal lol. We're not doing fine china... the set we picked works well for casual and for formal.

  • we already have everyday dishes so we only registered for fine bone china.

  • Hmm...guess I'll have to look into this now.  No fine china for us either.  We know we will never use that!
  • We just picked out two sets we liked that mixed well. I just checked and they are both bone china. I wanted to register for it b/c I like hosting dinner parties. I know I'll use it a lot. :)
  • I just looked and I cannot for the life of me find where it says what they're made out of.

  • We registered for plain white bone china from macy's The Hotel collection. It's affordable, and the plain white makes it perfect for every day use, but if we wanted to ever get some bone china with a pattern, it would all mix right in.
  • We registered for Wedgewood fine bone china (with patterned accent plates from Vera Wang for Wedgewood) for dinner parties, holidays, etc. I know that we'll use it in the future - though for now, it's going to stay in the boxes! We also registered for Villeroy & Boch porcelain dinnerware for everyday use.
