Snarky Brides

I'm angry.

This is a vent.

We hired the videographer our friend used for his wedding and we loved the guy on the day of, plus we loved our friend's video. Now, it's almost five months later, and we still have no video. The guy turned my friend's video around quickly (and I don't recall what we discussed regarding turn around time at the meeting--my mistake--nor does it say anything in our contract, just that final payment is due upon receipt of video). N emailed him a month or two ago and asked where the video was, the guy said he'd be done soon adn would contact us.

Fast forward to me, tonight. I'm going through my pictures to pick some possible album choices and I get pissed off thinking of the video. I email him and he says it will be done in two weeks. WTF? Also, when I asked him about our highlights video, he said "What is a trailer?" like he had no idea.

I'm starting to get really pissed and alternately nervous that I'm going to fucking hate this video when we finally get it.

Re: I'm angry.

  • Uh yeah, I'd be pissed.
  • Ugh! At least you are able to withhold final payment, right? That at least gives you some leverage.

  • That sucks.

Is it just me or do I only hear complaints about wedding videos and wedding videoraphers?

  • Oh man, I'd be pissed too! I don't blame you. Can you possibly report him (or at least threaten) to the BBB?
  • Yeah, at least we haven't given the final payment which makes me feel like I have something over him (although, who the eff knows if he's even sweating it since it's been this long).

We figured we'd have some lag time because of the holidays and all, plus we were too busy to really keep on top of it. On top of that, our photog was superfast, but we knew she would be, so I figured we'd have to wait a while for our video. But, seriously, next week will be 5 months. I need to find out when N last contacted him regarding the video.
  • They did, Brandi. Plus, we gave him a song to use in it, so I know that he discussed it with my husband. I have to figure out what all was said between them via email once he gets home from the gym.

Chels, I don't want to jump to the BBB until I get the video and it's horrible. I mean, technically he hasn't done anything wrong yet, kwim?

I suppose.. but didn't you sign a contract with him? You paid for part of a service and he hasn't delivered. I'd show him the e-mails from awhile ago that said months ago that he said it'd be done i na couple weeks.

My guess though is he completely forgot about it and is just making it sound like he's been working on it.

We thought this, too. The guy on the day of was wonderful (different from the owner, who we worked with on the contract and all).

I have to say, he has always had grammar issues in his emails and comes across as disorganized, but his work was really beautiful. Plus, the video guy was there on time, was totally unobtrustive, and has a lot of experience with our photog, so we felt comfortable. I can show you my friend's trailer--it's lovely.

I'm going to be SO pissed if mine if fucked up.
  • We waited 5+ months. and when we finally got it he spelled my freaking name wrong and got the date fpr the wedding wrong. I feel your pain. I was so mad, and still am.

No, he didn't say it would be done in a few weeks and there's no time frame in our contract. My friends had theirs done in a few weeks by the same guy. IDK what we discussed in our meeting, verbally, but N might remember.

  • Oh no, Alli :(

My blood is boiling. I feel like sending an email right now saying that I'm seriously concerned about this at this point, seeing as he seems to have no idea WTF is going on for the past 5 months. I won't until I hear back from him, but I want to verbally junk punch him.
  • Hmmm... I suppose it is like your pictures and if they mess up you're likely to be really mad. As opposed to a cake or chair sashes or something that is just a one-day type of thing you might be able to let go of more easily.

  • THIS is my photog's wedding video (she used the same guy).

In looking at my contract, the only thing I can think of is that it does say he needs 15-20 honeymoon pictures. I'm positive N told him that we weren't going on our HM until the summer, so to just cut that and fill with something else. We already sent in the baby/dating pics and song choice. Maybe he just had it misfiled because he was waiting for HM pics?

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: I'm angry. : That's what I was concerned with. But I am SO, SO glad that we did. It's not like we sit around watching it all the time but it was awesome to listen to everyone wish us well and to see the ceremony, etc. from a different POV. Plus also, photos don't capture action necessarily. My processional song was a surprise for my H and the videographer captured him tearing up when he realized that the song was. Priceless. Cheesy, yes, but true. Our highlight video (yes, I feel like being an AW. Eff it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDQSJZXL-kE

  • Seriously. I can't believe the wedding's over. Although I remember at the end of the night, I was ready for it to be over--not in a "omg, I'm so done with this" but in a "omg best night ever! I had so much fun!!" kind of way. N said it went by crazy fast for him.

The pink golf lady cracked me up, too.

[QUOTE]Thanks, Brandi. That's another reason why a pro would be better over a family member - unless you have a family member that knows how to do that detailed kind of taping/editing. The entire video is like an hour long, I think? Maybe longer. He has shots from getting ready (around 1pm) to dancing after dinner & cake (9pm). The day was SUCH a whirlwind that it was nice to go back and have a record of what went on. Even though it takes hours, it goes SO SO fast. Seriously. It was the fastest 12-14 hours of my life.

  • Don't know if it's the wine or remembering what I was getting ready for this time last year, but I totally cried at jcb's video.

Nates, I'm sure it's going to come out fine. It sounds like he's talented but maybe a bit unorganized. Fingers crossed you get your video soon.

  • JCB I'm in love with your video! You are so pretty!! This actually made me rethink my decission on whether we're gonna have one or not. Also, your hydrangeas are gorgeous.

  • Thanks, Girlie. I sure hope so.

He emailed me back that he would review our contract. When N got home, we reviewed all of the emails we exchanged with him. I just responded that I appreciate him looking into it and then I detailed my concerns, (i.e. last email stated video was at the editors, but that was March 15th, now he's saying it's another two weeks to finish, contract was wrong regarding HM pics being included, etc). I mean, in the end, it is what it is, but I just want this fucking video, I want it to be as good as his other work, and I want to be done with waiting.
  • I'm a little late, but we just got our video last week. exactly 7.5 months after our wedding. I mean, it was great to watch, but I was feeling the same as you at 4...5...6...and 7 months.
  • With my videographer the highlight video/trailer is an additional fee
  • Nates, I hope it works out for you. Our guy finally got it right, but it took a lot of bitchy e-mails.

  • I noticed you said that the guy who came to do your video is not the same person you originally booked with. Is he part of a company? Have you contacted the owner? I know some companies freelance their videographers (they are independent contractors and are called by the company to do an event, and usually paid a flat fee to do so) and some companies use all in house people, so I would start there first. I would also be very vocal with the owner with how upset you are as well as your complaints and worries about the end result. At the end of the day, whoever you signed the contract with is the person ultimately responsible for the outcome of the service they are providing. Hopefully, everything works out well for you.

Someone else also mentioned hiring a professional vs. asking a family member. I am not a professional, but I did my cousins wedding about 5 years ago. They decided the week before the wedding that they really did want a video and by then it was too late to book someone, and also not in their budget. My parents own a small handheld camera and I was able to tape the ceremony and a lot of the reception. I zoomed in where I thought was appropriate and tried to get them at different angles. They were able to take the video I shot to Wal-Mart and there they have a program that allowed my cousins to set the video to music and add all sorts of other visual effects. I saw the final product and was shocked as to how well it turned out. The total cost for them was around $50 and that was all for the editing and conversion from the video camera tape to a dvd.

For my own wedding my FI and I really wanted to hire a professional, but it wasn't in our budget. Besides, after looking at several in our area, and after a disastrous meeting with one guy who no one should ever call, we decided to ask an uncle from each side. We are lucky that both our uncles are very tech savvy and have the latest cameras on the market. They are both going to shoot video and then edit them together for us on their computers. I know this isn't the case for everyone, but honestly, how often are you going to watch the video? The last time we saw my cousins was 3 years ago. She recently got it out during her pregnancy, but until then, no one had viewed it in years. If you have the money, go for it. If not, ask a family member, or friend.
