NWR: If I get arrested today... with UPDATE

I dropped my son off at school this morning and what did I see? Those anti-Catholic, anti-war, anti-gay, anti-military, anti-everything protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS are picketing (screaming, waving signs, stepping on flags) in front of his school. Grrr .... These are the same folks that protest at funerals of service men and women! It's a good thing I was still wearing my PJs, or I would have parked the car to have a conversation. Pause for that visual ... LOL!

BUT ... in about 1/2 hour, I'll be dressed and heading out again. If you hear a report of a "mother of a high school student ..." getting arrested in Washington, DC, today for popping one of those jerks in the mouth, you'll know who it is.

Good morning!

UPDATE: The protesters left (I passed by the school 2 hrs after I dropped my son off), thank goodness. My son's school is an all boys Jesuit high school and, based on some of the signs I saw (which I will not quote here!) they were spouting off about the Pope, priests, etc. Perhaps they thought making the point on kids' first day back to school would be impressive. Thankfully, they moved on. I wouldn't really have popped anyone in the mouth, but if they'd still been there I might have staged my own silent protest. And so it goes ... another exciting day in DC!

What were they protesting at your son's school? Also, I hope you don't get arrested. They are SO not worth it. Wink

They are not worth the effort! They protested last year at my daughter's school, with nasty signs, shouting and screaming - and with little children also carrying the signs. I was proud of the fact that the high school kids had their own signs, but said nothing. At one point, they all turned their backs on them, to show the protesters they were being ignored (sweet!).

Short of a medical emergency, there's not much that should make you get out of your car in your PJs (especially with no makeup on!)...and they definitely aren't worth it!

One of the local high schools here just staged The Laramie Project (a play about the young gay man who was dragged and killed for being gay). The Westboro Baptist Church idiots were there as well.
    (1) I was overjoyed that the school superintendent, being interviewed by the Boston media, refused to so much as acknowledge their presence or respond to their actions, instead choosing to highlight her pride in the work of the students and the importance of the issue they were showcasing.
    (2) The media also interviewed a student who declined to acknowledge them as well, instead sharing how uplifting the experience of performing in the show had been to him and to the entire cast, and how well supported they were by the entire school community and their families.
    (3) I was also pleased that the media chose to show these interviews, to NOT do any interviews with the idiots, and to limit visual exposure of their hate message as well.
    (4) I love that the motorcycle club follows them around and escorts the funerals to protect the families from this hate speech.

My DH and I share our values, but he is a strong ACLU supporter-- who is working on the side of the idiots in the Supreme Court case. Interesting debates in our house!! ~Donna

Well that will definitely wake up the protective mom and patriot in all of us.... They are not worth the time or the effort...

But knowing me I would've scared the heck out of them and gotten out of my car in pj's without makeup on and kindly mentioned (while scaring and scarring those around me) what I thought of their protest.

Glad they were gone when you went back to check though.

That could've been fun! I am just disgusted at how much anger and hate these people spew. Just sickening.

Wow! That's all I can say.

Any idea what it was exactly they were protesting? I'd love to know, because my son is at home with us right now, but lives in DC and he always points this stuff out to me.

Are they just randomly driving around the country protesting Catholic institutions? I was raised a Catholic, went to Catholic schools for 12 years (because Detroit schools sucked, not because my parents really cared about a parochial education). I disagree with a crap load of stuff about the Church, but had no idea they were targeting religious education.

They are the current day's version of the KKK, sad but true.

As far as I can make out, the Phelps crowd will spew their hate anywhere they think they can get noticed. They make their living by aggravating people to the point of violence, then suing for their resulting injuries.

We are not sure why they targeted this school on this day, other than the supposed stance they take against priests teaching children.

As a parent, my question would have been, "Why do you want to harass children on their way to school?" Of course, they were saved by my state of dress ... lucky them. They moved on after the first bell @ 8:10 a.m.

I would welcome their protest if they made it in front of the school as adults were going in for a parents' meeting, but somehow I doubt they'd be able to take that heat. Yeah, pick on kids. And so it goes ...

Those people make me ashamed I live in Kansas! They protested at my high school when I was a junior because we had an extracurricular club that was called "Gay/Straight Alliance". Down right disgusting the things they say. I"m so sorry you had to see them.

The other thing that sucks is that the leader and some of his kids are pretty good lawyers so they've weasled themselves out of many situations before, UGH sickens me the things they've done.

I am certain you had it worse, as a high school student, to deal with them. I have no respect for anyone that targets kids going about their business -- getting an education -- it is shameful. I know a lot of great Kansans. These folks certainly don't fall into that bucket. Thanks for your concern. *sigh*

Oh my. Glad you didn't get arrested, but we'd bail you out!!!! I haven't had the opportunity to interact with the Phelps crowd, but when my daughter started the Gay Straight Alliance at her high school here in the bible belt, I had to go and get her so she wouldn't be accosted by a bunch of bible thumpers who were protesting the start of this student group. My daughter's pretty savvy and figured out that if they refused this group, they had to refuse them ALL including the athletic groups. So, when faced with that decision, the prinicipal had to let them form the group. We later caught him ripping down posters about the meeting notices, but that's another story.

We've occasionally had "Christian" protesters at our Pagan Pride celebrations, but the best course of action is just ignore them. You can't reason with ignorance.

Seriously, I wouldn't hurt a fly (well, maybe ... ) but you know how a mother's protective instincts kick in. I would have parked and gone back to stare them down, if not for the pajamas. LOL! I kept thinking about how embarassed my son would have been. Eeek!!
  • edited December 2011
Lisa, glad you didn't embarass your son OR get in trouble.

It's really horrible what these people do. The military funerals they protest at as well as all of their protests make me sick to my stomach.

Retread Bride, it is so inspiring to see people like you that work to buffer their protests. It's a reminder that of how compassionate the majority of our fellow human beings are.

Some people just need to disappear. Like ex husbands and these idiots.
