My Honey HATES Fondant

My honey very much dislikes the taste and texture of fondant.  Most of the pictures of wedding cakes we like seem to use it though.  Are there any options that we can look into that will give us the look we want?
Thanks!

A good baker can use buttercream and make the cake looks just as smooth (or almost as smooth) as fondant.

Find a good baker who works with buttercream.  I'm with your FI.  I have yet to taste fondant that doesn't taste like play-doh and if I'm paying for something edible, then it had better be edible.

Your FI is not alone.  A lot of people don't like fondant.  Like PPs said, a good baker can make buttercream smooth as fondant.

Also, marzipan looks like fondant but tastes better. It can't be made white-white, though.

We also used buttercream because we don't like fondant.  Our baker made it look just as smooth as fondant.

A lot of people hate fondant however my baker is making the cake with a huge layer of butter cream then adding the fondant to it so it can be pulled off for those who don't want it but they stil have the icing flavor.

I'm with your fiance, fondant is gross. As long as you have a decent cake baker and your cake will be kept in air-conditioning, you should be able to have a smooth finish on the cake icing.

I agree with PP that using buttercream to get the similar result should be NBD if the baker is experienced.   I'm the same way, we like all these designs that have fondant on them, but since fondant does taste like play-doh (thanks for that reference tldh! it made me laugh), we didn't want to use it.

I am a baker myself, and I agree that you can get buttercream to look just as smooth. Also, yes Marshmallow fondant is a totally different experience and tastes so much better. You can also look into using modeling chocolate. It's just as smooth as fondant but is made out of chocolate and corn syrup, so tastes much better.

There are some designs that can only be done on fondant (like hand painting, and quilting looks better on fondant than buttercream). Also if your wedding is outdoors in and may be hot I would stick with fondant as it will melt slower than buttercream alone. You can always ask your baker to put a little but of extra buttercream under the fondant so he can peel it off. I make wedding cakes and other fondant cakes and I know some people dont like it so I make sure there is enough buttercream under the fondant so people can peel it off and still have buttercream.
