Marriage License

So, my officient approached me today and asked me who's going to hold the marriage license during the ceremony.  Who holds it?  A bridesmaid or someone in the audience?

Re: Marriage License

  • I always thought that was part of the officiant's job lol.

Errr, yeah I have never heard of or seen this either. Just the MOH holding the bride's bouquet. Usually, I think everyone signs it after the ceremony, and either right before or after pictures, so it seems like the officiant could just tuck it in the Bible or in with whatever script he/she is reading from.

Our best man held it!  I came down the aisle and he was holding a folder.  It proved useful because the sun was in my eyes so he held it up to block it, but I did keep wondering "Why the hell does he have that folder anyway?"  It all worked out.

EDIT: We signed our licsense during the ceremony.  It couldn't sit on the table due to wind - it would have blown into the ocean :-)
  • The Officiant's job is to sign the marriage license along with your two witnesses. Our best man held the license, ensure that it had the right signature, photocopied it for use (you will need a bunch of copies to change your name on everything) and ensured that the original was mailed in to the appropriate government office.
  • Be aware that what you need to do with the license is different in every state.  In IL, we didn't even sign the license, nor did we need witnesses to sign.  I gave the license to the minister with an addressed, stamped envelope, and never saw it again.  He signed it and mailed it in.

Also, I don't think photocopies of the license will do you any good.  In most places you need a certified copy of the marriage certificate, which is issued after you submit the license.

  • I thought the officiant held it too!  Maybe he meant for after the ceremony like you guys are saying...that totally makes more sense! I'll have to get clarification...Thanks girls!

Amy B. that might be a Cook county thing because when I went to get the license in McHenry county they told me it had to be signed by both of us in front of the officiant, who also signs, plus two witnesses.

No one held ours.  It was upstairs in our hotel room, with the minister's papers, during the ceremony.

ETA:  There was no requirements for witnesses to sign the license, only H, the minister and I were required to sign.  Not every locale has the same legal requirements for signature, witnesses, etc.
