NWR: Please recommend your digital camera

I'm looking for a new point and shoot digital camera.  I'd prefer something with at least 12 megapixels and I'd like it to be cheaper than $200.  Any suggestions??  Preferably cameras that you girls own and love.

TIA!

I have a fujifilm finepix s100ofd that i absolutely love. Its a point and shoot with a DSLR feel. It takes amazing pictures in auto mode and it also has a manual mode. Its 10MP with 12x zoom. My only complaint about it would be its size. Its large for a point and shoot but I wanted a more professional camera so I do not mind too much.

It looks like its discontinued now but they are selling a similar model that is 12 MP.
Here is the amazon link to the new model

Have you looked at cnet.com for reviews?  I find their reviews really helpful for tech stuff.

Here is their list of cameras that are $100-$200, 10 mp +, sorted by their editors' reviews:

I have the Canon Powershot SD 1000 too, so does my FI. I believe the newest version is the SD1300.

We love our cameras! The fit in a small bag or the pocket of our jeans and take  great pictures.  The new ones come in fun colors too! Good Luck!

    yep!  SD780IS
its light & tiny and takes amazing pictures...12MPx  it also has HD video.  i think it was $299 at best buy and $250 at walmart...but this was in december, so it may have gone down.  PS:  best buy honored the walmart price (we wanted to use our best buy cc)

Completely Agree with the Canon powershot...

I have this one and love it, its a bit bigger but has a lot of great features. I can blow any image to 30" x 40" and still print them out. It also has video capability.

Don't get sucked into the megapixel marketing.  Anything above 6-7 MP is fine for a point and shoot up to an 11x14 print.  Printers typically print 250-280 dpi.  so an 11x14 print is about a 6.5 MP picture.  More mega-pixels allow you to crop from a larger picture but how much cropping do you intend to do?

Also, the sensors in point and shoots are all about the same size regardless of MP so adding more megapixels just increases the density of the pixels.  Basically each pixel is smaller, and lets in less light and equals more grain.  This is one reason why point and shoots suck in low light.  My 7 yr old olympus 3 MP takes better pictures than my newer canon 7 MP point and shoot...go figure.  The megapixel war is just that.....MARKETING!

Anyway, all point and shoots suffer from the same limitations.  I wouldn't get sucked into or pay extra for useless features like face/smile/blink detection.  The basic differences are focal length.  Some of them have longer or wider zooms, and some of them have super zooms that cover a great deal of range from wide angle to zoom.  These features, in my opinion are what make one over the other more useful.  I would also avoid sony, unless you have other sony devices....proprietary memory cards are useless in other (non sony) devices.

also, realize that the smaller the package, the worse the flash performance will be, directly affecting the quality of indoor pictures.....it's all a trade off.  Also, the smaller slimline ones typically have rechargable internal batteries.  Once they are dead, you have to stop shooting and recharge.....not real good if you are at the grand canyon lookout and run out of battery life!  Some of the newer ones have removable batteries so u can buy a spare but they are odd shaped and not cheap.  I prefer AA batteries in my point and shoots so I can replace them at will but these cameras tend to be a bit bigger and are getting harder and harder to find.

BTW I typically shoot with a DSLR but have a point and shoot as a backup.

    Hope this helps......

User - Thank you for the very thorough response!!  Clearly I'm clueless about a lot of this, haha.  Which point-and-shoot cameras do you recommend?

I am a canon fan but the new lumix lineup are really nice.  It really depends on what you are photographing?

    Groups of people?
    Scenic?
    Sports?
    Mostly indoor?
    Mostly outdoor?
    Do you care about video?

Groups of people?  Not huge groups
Scenic?  Some - don't need anything amazing
Sports?  Some - don't need anything amazing
    Mostly indoor?  Indoor and outdoor
    Mostly outdoor?  Indoor and outdoor
Do you care about video?  Not at all... don't need it.
