Dress Dilemma

Ok so I have a friend that got married last year on my bday and she got married in the dress that I tried on once before. Maggie Sottero Adorae. She is willing to rent it to me for my wedding. Well my mom is on the fence about it because she is only charging me $350 to rent it BUT I will have to add cups to it because it is HUGE in the chest and it is long on me with heels on even though I want to wear flats. So I am not sure how much those alterations will cost but my mom is telling me to look out for a dress that may be on sample sell or something before I go with this one....

I know mommy is always right but I just don't want to drop 2k or more on a dress.....and every dress I like is in that price range...HELP!

Re: Dress Dilemma

  • Why only rent to you if you're doing all those alterations? I would ask if you could just buy then it'd be yours and I think it would more validate the costs for you. My dress is too big, I was able to call around and get price ranges on hemming, and getting the sides in. If it's your dream dress at a great price and you haven't found anything else that gives you 'that feeling' i say GO FOR IT.

  • Yeah, ask if she could sell it to you. It really doesn't make much sense to rent a dress, have it altered then give it back to her???

  • That's my dress!!!  Love it, Love it, Love it :)  But I don't think it makes sense to have alterations on something you can't keep :(  You should also look online for that dress, a lot of brides sell their dresses afterwards for a lot less than the orginial purchase price.

  • so i felt stupid after I hit post because you all are right it won't make sense to alter it and give it back to her...

In January I purchased a knockoff dress from this site where a sorority sister of mine had her wedding dress made and I loved my dress for the ball...NO ONE had my dress on! I sent them a picture of the dress and told them to scale it down a little bit and voila! below is what I got! I think I may find a dress I like and hit them up!! The Tony Bowls dress is like $450 and I paid $138 (shipping from China was $80)

    ^^^this.
  • When  is your wedding? Do you have time to shop a bit? You might find something less expensive that you actually love --  or like PPs said... buy it from her...
  • If you have time I would say keep looking. If not maybe you should try that shop that did your other dress you were talking about it you really love this dress. I don't know if I would want to wear the same dress my friend wore, but if its your dress go for it.

  • good morning ladies

Casey, if you're considering a preowned dress already, please look here:

I saw four Adorae dresses available selling for between $600-$850 - some have very slight alterations, but I believe two of them haven't been altered at all.   Hope that helps.

  • My wedding is July 2013 so i have some time. I know that the places I have gone in Baton Rouge and New Orleans told me it could take up to 9 months for a dress to come in. I am going to go shop again and just see. If I don't find something I may look into getting a dress made where I had a ball dress made.

  • I sent the place images of dresses that I like and I am waiting on quotes back now. I will make another post with the dresses I like. I thought about the point of the matter of wearing the same dress my friend wore. I will keep you all posted!
