let's talk centerpieces!

I am starting to try to figure out our centerpieces.  fiance and i love something like this:
centerpiece
(our colors are shades of purple/lavendar and platinum). our venue provides votives with glass holders like the ones around the pictured centerpiece above and a large vase with a floating candle (as pictured only larger) and we will be having a black tablecloth with undecided color of table runner (either a light shade of purple or platinum).  we would just need to buy the flowers. however, i want something else to go with this look as it is a bit plain to me.  i thought maybe a mirror to place the vase on and some flower petals would be pretty....

anyone have suggestions?? we are trying to save money by not having monstrous flower centerpieces and i am not very DIY-capable....

also, i would love to see your centerpiece inspiration pics or DIY centerpiece projects!!! i have been obsessed with looking at different centerpieces lately and would love to see what everyone has been working on.

This is ours.  The flowers are glued to a styrofoam ball.  I purchased them from another Knottie because it was cheaper and I didn't have the patience to do it all myself.  The flowers are a much brighter purple color in person.  The linens will be royal blue and my venue provides silver colored votive holders.

The color is more like these which is how the other Knottie used them

  • I love the floating candle look! Half of our centerpieces will be a floral arrangement with small candles and rose petals surrounding them on the table, and the other half will be an arrangment of 3 different sized (height) square vases with a floating candle, purple pebbles, and floating flowers (probably stock), also with small candles and flower petals surrounding them on the tables. I was trying to cut down on our flower budget too!

  • We're doing what you are for half of our tables, but we're doing 3 vases (7", 10" 14"), since I thought 1 might get lost. The other half of our centerpieces are floral with a mix of stargazer lilies, orchids, gladiola, and whatever else our florist throws in there. :)

  • This is my inspiration for the floral arrangement btw.

  • All of your ideas are really, really pretty.  We are using birds of paradise surrounded by orchids in a square vase.  Reception is outside on the river so square vases are a necessary evil.  Anyways, below is my inspiration.  Still need to determine what type of rocks/marbles/etc will go in the vase.

  • I think a mirror would be a great addition to that. We are using these: http://www.orientaltrading.com/octagon-shaped-mirrors-a2-70_3788-12-1.fltr?Ntt=mirror. I already ordered one set to check the quality and I'm really happy with it.

Another way to spice it up would be with fun or pretty table numbers. Do you know what you're doing for those yet?

  • everyone has such gorgeous centerpieces!! i love threads with pictures in them :)

bmore thanks so much for the oriental trading tip!! those mirrors are perfect, i am definitely going to order some! i also like that they sell sets of small mirrors that might be fun for decoratins cocktail tables??

here is a table number that i have found off of etsy that fiance and i both like:

lady i love the idea of the sliced limes!! what a fun (and cheap!) way to add color into your centerpieces
  • We're doing something similar with our centerpieces. We are putting a 12" mirror under the vase. I am also getting submersible LED lights so it looks like this.

The stones I got look almost like diamonds so I'm possibly thinking about scattering a few on the mirror. I originally wanted to get 3 of the big vases in different heights, but it would increase the price per centerpiece too much. Instead I may be getting 2" versions of the large vase and put a few of them on the edges of the mirror with a few of the stones in the bottom. I'm still undecided on some of the ideas, but we'll see what it looks like when I get some of the items and start putting it together.

    Here's the 2" vases.

funny you mention this - my fiance is very picky and he said he would really only like this idea with the floating flowers in a water filled vase if we could put lights in them! where did you find these waterproof LED lights??

  • Butterfly- I just did a search on Google for submersible LED lights and got a few websites. There are a few others besides the ones I listed. the first one has them for $1.00 each, but the second one give you a bulk discount for $0.98 each.

  • Butterfly,

That is FREAKING beautiful. Wow. I love it.

Our centerpieces will be SOMETHING like this - but perhaps with a different flower. Our venue provides them, sets them up, etc.

  • Butterfly, I think yours looks gorgeous.

  • We are also doing the submerged LED lights. We doing white carnations (they are cheaper than other flowers out there) with a white LED light. Like this:

  • Here is what one of ours will look like minus the black at the bottom. I want to surround them with tea lights

    Here's our second one.

Both will have peacock feathers inside of them :D

  • I am doing what butterfly posted but three at various heights, for half my centerpieces.  The others have the sliced limes like Lady but with brightly colored hydragenas instead of the gerber daisies.  I am putting halved limes around the floating candles centerpieces as well.  I also might do mirrors, not sure yet though on those.

  • Love some of the ones in this thread!

I'm meeting with a couple florists in two weeks, so I will know better then, but at this point, we are leaning away from a lot of flowers. I have a combination of these two in mind. I love the look of the branches, even though that's probably more spring/fall...I don't care lol We are kind of having a bird theme throughout everything, so it could be cute.

I love those LED lights girls!

Originally I wanted blossoming branches with hanging candles but that was a no go. So here is a picture of our centerpiece mock up

Different tablecloth however. Day of there should be more purple and red and less light pink. There will be votives at the base and I'd like to ask for some pink petals. I'm really excited about it! :)
