Re: **balletdawn**

  • Hi there - I used to exclusively be a ballet dancer. But injuries & scoliosis turned me into a teacher. I haven't performed in a few years. I also teach tap, jazz, fitness & and occasional pilates or yoga class. We have a show tonight with just our Jr. Repertory Company-the high school sophomores, juniors & seniors do it all-music selection, choreography, costumes, lighting, backstage management, promotion, etc. It's pretty cool. Then we have a show next week that involves our whole school (most call it a recital). Then I am choreographing a tap number that will be performed next week by a group of actors in a 1940's swing-type review.

Here's a link to our show tonight (and that's my kid!) http://www.jhcenterforthearts.org/calendar/event/new-dances-new-choreographers

What kind of dance did you do? I'm planning on retiring/slowing down from teaching in a year or 2 and can't wait to take class as a dancer again instead of watching other people do it!!!
  • Wow, that's cool that you're a teacher. The health issues and injuries are not so cool and I'm sorry.

I danced for 18 years. Tap, jazz, ballet, modern, and hip-hop. Then I was in a car accident and my dancing career was over. Sad face. I tried to go back but my body just couldn't move like that anymore. I'm super jealous that you are still involved with dance. That's awesome. I miss it so much. The thirll of the stage, the rush of the music, counting beats to 8. I guess it just wasn't meant to be for me so I'll live vicariously through you. :)

  • Bleh, sorry about your accident too. I'm lucky (I guess?) I had an avulsion fracture when I was 16 at a Joffrey audition and my teacher sat me down & told me that she wasn't going to tell me I couldn't perform, but that she wanted to train me to teach so I had a better chance of having a career in dance. So I did apprenticeships with 2 different teachers and have been teaching for almost 20 years now. It's good to still be involved for sure, though there is only 1 studio where we live & I'm not in love. But I'll at least continue through next year so my daughter's lessons are free.

I still perform, but not ballet anymore. I fire dance :) people in general hire me for parties and I go throw some fire around & get paid pretty well. This is me spinning at my brother's wedding last August:
