DIY teeth whitening

Has anyone done DIY teeth whitening? The boxes are so expensive! Suggestions? I've seen some on pinterest, but I don't dare do anything without reccomendation :)  thanks!

Re: DIY teeth whitening

  • I have done a few different at home kits.  My favorite was the crest 2 hour strips.  They are amazing.  A little on the spendy side for strips but definitely worth it, IMO.  I read reviews online that they can cause major pain and sensitivity for days so I was hesitant to try them, but I did not experience any of that.

  • I feel like my white strips lasted up to 6 months when I used the entire kit.

[QUOTE]I am in the midst of whitening my teeth without the strips. The last few times I used the strips, they made my teeth sensitive. What I'm using, has worked great so far. I'm only doing it once a week to minimize my teeth sensitivity, but I could probably do it 3-4 times a week with no issue (the suggested number of times from my dentist). I've been doing it for 6 weeks. I noticed a difference after about 2 weeks. 1 part mouth rinse (e.g. Listerine) to 1 part hydrogen peroxide - rinse before brushing. Brush with 1 part toothpaste and 1 part baking soda. It is effective enough to get results, but gentle enough to not ruin your enamel or cause teeth sensitivity for most people. You should rinse and brush with this stuff before bed. *Once you get to the white level you want, you do it only once a week or once every two weeks, depending on how much teeth staining you do (e.g. drinking red wine, drinking coffee, etc) to maintain the level of whiteness you want. Using whitening toothpaste will also help.*

  • I just started using the Crest strips and they cause me major pain and sensitivity. I am reducing the time I have them on my teeth and use them right before bed so I can "sleep the pain off" so far that has worked but I havent noticed any difference in the color of my teeth. After this box is gone I doubt I would ever use them again.
  • My FI used the crest white strips over 3 years ago and his teeth are still super white. I'm sure this isn't typical but it's enough to convince me.

  • I also use the 2 hour Crest strips and they are awesome. My teeth only got slightly more sensitive, like with really cold things, but other than that, I was fine.
  • I tried the Crest White Strips several years ago and got great results. I used the whole box according to the directions. The results definitely lasted for several months. My teeth were a little bit sensitive to them, but not unbearably so. On the other hand, my FI tried them last year and said they hurt like hell. He only used them for a couple of days and then stopped.
