Anyone been to Punta Cana?

Has anyone ever been to Punta Cana? Fiance and I want an all-inclusive adults-only preferably resort and we have been looking at Punta Cana.  There are a couple of things that make me hesistant to go there so maybe some of you who have been there can put my hesistations to rest.  I have looked at a lot of pictures on tripadvisor and it appears to be windy there a lot.  Also the ocean seems to be rougher which doesn't bother me but my fiance has never been to the ocean and I don't want it to be that way on our honeymoon.  We are also open to other suggestions but have decided we don't want to go to Mexico, or Jamaica necessarily.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Anyone been to Punta Cana?

  • Punta Cana is amazing, I've been three times. I stayed twice at the club med there and once at Paradisus. I would recommend both resorts. I have also been to Puerto Plata which is on the other side of the island which is also really nice. What time of year are you planning on going? I have been there during Christmas, April and in June. I don't remember it being particularly windy at all and the weather was always nice. The ocean is also pretty calm from what I can remember it isnt't completely flat but I wouldn't call it "rough" and you can pretty much just lounge in the ocean. Hope you enjoy your honeymoon : )

  • We honeymooned in Punta Cana and loved it. The water was not too rough and the sand was almost white- absolutley beautiful. We stayed at the Now Larimar and it was very nice. I don't recall it being very windy.
  • We just booked our honeymoon at Excellence Punta Cana after hearing rave reviews from a friend and my cousin. Both honeymooned in Punta Cana and loved it! Our friends stayed at Iberostar, which was not adults only, but they still loved it. My cousin stayed at Dreams and highly recommended it as well. Neither mentioned wind or rough water!

<div>Excellence was actually where we were thinking of booking our honeymoon as well!  I read a few reviews on tripadvisor that said that about the ocean but then today also saw that if you walked down the beach a little farther that it was a lot better.  I can't make my mind up between here or Sandals Royal Bahamian.  </div>

We are so excited to go to Excellence. Our TA highly recommended it. We have heard so many things about Sandals being overpriced/overrated, so we didn't even consider any of those.
  • I absolutely loved the Excellence Punta Cana, but here's what I experienced in July 2009.

    1. The resort is not on the extremely blue water. I have pictures if you'd like to see any. The resort is on the Atlantic side rather than the Caribbean. We experienced extremely rough water. The day we arrived a life guard even drowned from the under tow, which was very scary. The whole time we were there they had red flags up. Mind you there was no tropical storms or any substantial wind/rain while we were there.

    2. The pool is AMAZING. Huge.

    3. The restaurants are delicious! and I definitely recommend the Excellence Club.
  • Also take a look at Majestic Elegance in Punnta Cana- we honeymooned there in August 2011 and it was absolutely beautiful. Worth taking a look.

    Hi There

I was married there, honeymooned there, and I own a Travel Agency so I can tell you it's a wonderful place. I have seen or stayed at every property in Punta Cana. I would be happy to answer any questions for you. I personally don't care for the beach at Excellence and think it is much more rough than other properties on Bavaro. Depending on what you want to spend my picks are as follows: paradisus Palma real, iberostar grand, secrets royal beach and majestic elegance. Feel free to contact me for specifics. It's my second home so I love to share

</div><div>Thanks so much for offering to help me!  I have read a lot of things about the beach at Excellence as well not being as good.  I would really like an adults only resort and for sure all-inclusive.  I will research the ones that you mentioned.  I also find myself looking at Sandals Royal Bahamian?  Have you ever been there?  We are up in the air about where we want to go (with the exception of no Mexico).  Any other suggestions?

  • We went to Punta Cana (Tortuga Bay in the Punta Cana resort), and it was amazing.  The resort company owns the International Airport, and guarantees to have you off the plane, through customs, and on resort grounds within 15 minutes!  That was just a great prelude to a wonderful honeymoon package, complete with a luxurious couples massage, horseback rides on the beach, a romantic suite overlooking the ocean, etc etc.  The beach and ocean were beautiful (this was in October 2010); white sand, warm water, and I don't remember too much wind.  I highly recommend this particular place in Punta Cana.  Oh, and if you go, please make sure to try some of the Punta Cana Ecological Preserve honey--it is delicious!  And please buy me some; I'm completely serious when I say I'll pay you back for any shipping expenses.  Contact me at inessa.fishman@gmail.com.  Thanks, Inessa
  • We just honeymooned in Punta Cana in June and stayed at the Majestic Colonial. We had a great time! We upgraded to the Colonial Club which was 100% worth it. We also had absolutely no problems with wind. I highly recommend it

  • How was Excellence?? I've been to DR a couple of times but I think I want to go for our honeymoon too!
  • I can just say do NOT stay at the Punta Cana Occidental Grand.  I had won a trip there a few years ago and it was subpar.
