Makeup

Have any of you ladies looked into a makeup artist yet? How much are you anticipating having to spend?

I've started my search and I have seen a crazy range in pricing.. from around $75 to over $400. UGH. I can't tell which option would be better -- possible botch-job with a cheaper MUA, or a "guaranteed" good job with an overpriced MUA. I dread the trial because they charge so much for those too, and if I don't like the first person, I'll have to pay more money to have a trial with someone else.

Anyone else experiencing this dilemma too??

Are there any other places around or maybe previous brides you can ask about salons? Luckily for me my hair dresser has someone she's worked with for yrs so I completely trust her. Id much rather she come to me where I'll be getting ready but her place is actually in bw home and church so it'll work out. There was also a post a few pages down on this. I can not believe how much some of you are being quoted!! Mine will be under 80$ and my girls shouldnt be paying more than 45$ or 50$. The same with mom and FMIL if they decide to come with. I hope you can find someone reasonable that you really like!!

  • I'm getting married in a super small town so I don't have a ton of options. But, there's a place that all of the girls go to for proms and most brides use for their weddings, that I plan on using. Their prices are super reasonable ($55 for hair, $35 for makeup) and I have heard good things about their work. I plan on going for a trial when I am home for my showers over my spring break to make sure they can do what I want for the big day.
  • FMIL has offered to pay for mine and my bridesmaids' makeup (she did this for her other DIL too), but I don't wear very much makeup in my day-to-day life, and when I do wear it for special occasions, I still don't wear very much.  The last experience I had with a makeup artist (for a wedding I was in) was bad.  I guess it's because I'm not used to so much foundation, etc and in my experience makeup artists LOVE to pack it on....

So I've been thinking about asking my MOH if she'll do my makeup instead (she's really good at doing her own and we could do as many free trials as we want).

  • I also found that the pricing varied widely and it wasn't something I was willing to go with the cheapest on.  In the end, I asked my photographer if there was someone she would recommend and she pointed me in the direction of someone.  I'm paying $75 for day-of makeup plus $75 for a trial. That price includes false eyelashes as well as airbrush (if I decide to go that route).
  • $75 is average pricing for wedding makeup around here, but I've seen places that do it for $45-55...
Your best bet is to call around to a bunch of places and sometimes you can see their portfolios online (which would let you skip a "trial)....

  • I can't be too much of help, as my BM is an MUA and doing mine as a gift.

  • Gah, some of you ladies are so lucky.
I've had some recommendations, but those tend to be the ones that were over-the-top expensive.
At least I still have some time to do more research!! :)

  • I was also being quoted a ridiculous amount!! My sister suggested I try Ulta, its a makeup store around here and back home. They actually do full makeup for $30!!!! The artist will come to us for an xtra $5, but I think we will just go to them. The trial is $30 as well. My kids 2nd cousin on their dads side went to beauty school so does hair. She is doing mine and my daughters hair as a gift, and her and a friend will do anyone else who wants it for $35-$30. So, not bad considering I was freaking out when I first started looking.

I HATE foundation. When I went to the store I spoke with the head aesthetican(sp) and explained that I hate it. We went around the store and she showed me some other stuff that when she put it on me I couldnt even feel it. However, I will see what it feels like the day of my trial. I mean a dollop on my hand for a few minutes, is much different than a whole face full all day long Im sure. But she said if I really didnt like it she wouldnt use it.

  • For those who don't like the feel of foundation, airbrush really is amazing. I was MOH in my MOH's wedding back in June, and one of our mutual friends (who was a BM for her and will be a BM for me) did airbrush for everyone in the wedding party. I was really skeptical about it at first, and while it feels funny as it's going on, you really don't feel it at all the entire day. We didn't even need any touch ups. And we all looked great, and my BM isn't even a professional MUA!

So, I don't know what the pricing looks like for airbrush, since we got it for free and will get it for free again, but in my experience as someone who rarely wears make up, it was pretty much the most awesome thing ever.

  • One of my bridesmaids is a makeup artist. Unfortunately, I hate the way she does makeup. It's been super awkward trying to avoid asking her since I know she wants the work. I'm trying to make excuses as to why I want someone else and how "I just want [her] to relax and enjoy being a part of the day." It doesn't make it easier that I have no idea who I actually should go to. There is a salon by my house that is very expensive but did a beautiful job on my friend's bridal party. So, I may just suck it up and pay the extra money & use the excuse that I did a package for hair and makeup to avoid using my friend.

Also, if I go to the salon, most of my bridal party can not afford to go there with me. That means I will be spending hours there getting ready alone and the bridal party girls will have to go somewhere cheaper. I had wanted to have everyone come to my house that morning with a hair stylist and makeup artist available and get ready together but now I'm not sure what to do.

  • I've done trials with two different MUAs and booked the second for our wedding day.

The first I did was for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in. I think it was $80 for the trial which included airbrush foundation and false eyelashes. I just really didn't like the airbrush makeup since it's so light-I didn't feel like it covered up blemishes or the slightly darker circles under my eyes.

The second trial I did was for my engagement pictures. This MUA does hair & makeup for ~$100 total and a trial is included in the package I ended up booking her for (since I really liked the results).

Keep looking around-I'm sure you will find someone you like at your price point. But I definitely suggest doing a trial, I can only imagine how awful it would be on the day of your wedding to be unhappy with your makeup. And the pictures online only tell so much since they are usually by professional photographers who of course touch them up.
