Wedding Band & Engagement rings

Hey Ladies!

My fiance and I are not in agreement about soldering together my wedding band and engagement ring...my wedding ring fits underneath of my engagement ring, and I just don't really want them soldered together. My fiance on the other hand thinks they should be soldered together.

Any comments for or against this?

I am not soldering mine together; because well they don't fit together. Why does your FH think yours should be soldered together? If they are going to be worn on your hand let him know what you are more comfortable with.

Ultimately I think the choice to solder them or not should be up to you, since you're the one who has to wear them. I chose to solder mine, since they fit together like pieces of a puzzle and I didn't want them moving around - here's a pic -

So yeah, that's why I had mine soldered. Many girls choose not to solder their bands to their e-rings, especially if the rings are straight across or if they want to wear only their band at times.

I think it should be whichever you find more comfortable. You are going to be the one wearing them and I have a feeling noone would notice unless they were told whether or not they were sodered together. We haven't found our wedding bands yet, so I don't know what I'll do. I imagine I'll solder mine but it really depends on the ring. Both of our birthdays are in September, so we both want my band to have sapphires in them.

I will probably solder mine, and here's why:

My engagement ring is a half-eternity, and the bottom of the band (that's plain white gold) is scratched to hell. My wedding band is plain white gold, and it will get scratched. If it spins, it will get scratched all around. By soldering it to the e-ring, only the bottom will get scratched.

Also: If your wedding band has pave-set or shared prong diamonds it WILL eat into the setting of your engagement ring, slowly but surely.

This website doesn't recommend soldering-- but as it's something that is reversible, I don't see why not.

Me too. I often just wear my wedding band (at the gym, cleaning, etc.), so I didn't solder mine. I like the flexibility of only wearing one ring when I need to. Ultimately, the decision should be yours!

I am not soldering. There will be times I want to wear the wedding band without the engagement ring. We were also concerned that soldering anything to the e-ring would hurt its value, plus it has little surprise diamonds on the sides that would be covered up.

I opted not to solder mine as my e-ring has ornate sides that I didn't want to be hidden.

i have a question would an enhancer count as your wedding band or is that totally different. if i were to buy an enhancer and that would be considered my wedding ring and still have to get a weding band .?? im not sure about any of this .. any help or answers would be appreciated thanx

I think as the one who ultimately has to wear the rings, you should get the final say in this.

My rings don't sit flush, but I would not solder them because there are times (camping, hiking, kayaking, etc.) where I don't want to wear my e-ring because I don't want anything to happen to it or lose the diamond. This way I can still wear my wedding band.

I didn't solder mine. I knew I would want the option of wearing them separately; my fingers tend to swell sometimes and it's more comfortable to wear just the one ring, or if I'm in a bad neighborhood, it's easier to hide the bling on the wedding band than on the engagement ring. I designed the setting of the wedding band in such a way that the diamonds aren't in any danger of being dislodged no matter how much they rub.

I didn't solder my rings because there are times when I can't wear my e-ring (when I am working with babies because it scratches them) and I don't want to not wear my wedding band.

Hey Ladies,

thanks for all the tips. My engagement ring does have pave shared prong set stones on the sides, and the wedding band has pave set stones and miligrain on the edges...this was my fiance's fear, was that the two would be rubbing together, and make stones loose, also scratch the rings.

here is a picture of the rings together...I guess for me the problem with soldering them together is that they can't really be taken apart after they are soldered together...

I plan on soldering because I really don't have a reason to wear them seperate and I'd rather just have them together to prevent any wear and tear in the future (this happened to my mom last year after 26 years).

The decision should be up to you. I'm not sure why your fiance is so set on you having it done?

If you do "need" them to be separated it can be easily done by your jeweler. I never planned on wearing just my band, so if I am in a situation where I wouldn't wear my ring then I just don't wear it and don't think much about it. I'm still married.

I bought a cheap titanium band for myself to wear during travel so I can leave my soldered wedding set at home. I can still wear a wedding band (though not "the" wedding band) without wearing my e-ring.

I didn't solder mine together. I take off my e-ring every night at bed and also when prepping raw meat, etc. My wedding band is always on though. They weren't a set, but they're from the same designer and the wedding band fits under a little lip on the e-ring

In the future I would love a 2nd wedding band and love the look of just the 2 bands stacked (w/o e-ring) for trips, etc.

My wedding band is also a half-eternity band but I am not soldering them together. I LOVE my e-ring but it is cathedral set, so it's not really appropriate to wear all the time (cleaning, cooking, working out, even doing my hair-- gets caught on things). I actually don't wear my e-ring unless I leave the house and I think once I'm married will usually just wear my wedding band.

I'm having mine soldered together because I'll have a total of 3 rings and I don't want them spinning independently of each other. I also have no occassion where I need to wear just a band, I picked the size diamond I did on my e-ring to make it comfortable to wear at all times, which is what I plan on doing (I only take it off when putting on lotion, or diving). If for some reason, the need arises that I can't wear my e-ring, then I don't see a problem with purchasing a simple, cheap band later.

But like the other posters have said...they are YOUR rings so it's a personal preference to you. It shouldn't matter to your FI one way or another...

I will be soldering my rings together. My e-ring and wedding band are a set. My wedding band has a notch cut out of it so that is will sit flush against my e-ring. Since I can not wear my wedding band without my e-ring I will be getting them soldered as I will have no reason to wear just my e-ring after the wedding.

If I was able to wear just my wedding band by itself I probably would not be getting them soldered together.

It's totally your decision. I am soldering, because I have a "puzzle" ring, kind of like AATB's.

If you're concerned about rubbing and whatnot, bring your ring to a jeweler and ask his/her professional opinion.

I have worked in a jewelery store for 5 years...

If the band is made to specifically fit into your engagement ring (has a cutout, curve or other feature that makes the two rings become "one" when worn together) then it is much better for yoru rings to be soldered. There is ALWAYS friction from the 2 rings rubbing no matter what style it is, but a tracer band or a slip in style are thinner at the connection point and that will wear out very quickly (5 years or less depending on your daily activity) if you do not connect them. It will also lead to future fit problems. Not worth it at all.

With these very specific bridal sets it just works out better to connect them.

And to the ladies who have prong-set rings - consider soldering them together as well because the prongs WILL rub and wear out much faster leading to broken prongs and lost or loose diamonds.

Do NOT solder them together!

No reputable jeweler will do this! When you solder jewelry, all gemstones, pearls and diamonds need to be removed first, otherwise, these stones may crack.

Please do not do this.
