Non-store-affiliated Registry

Hello, All!

I am looking for a wedding registry site that will allow me to post items NOT affiliated with a specific store, and allow guests to click a, "I purchased this," button to take that item off the list. Not to be shallow, but I would also like the site to be pretty!  So far I have found:

a) One list that allows me to list things, but requires guests to then search online and purchase something there before it will let the guest mark the item as bought (wishlist.com)

b) One list that allows me to list things, and allows people to say they have bought without having to purchase online ... but that is truly awful-looking as a website

c) One extraordinarily pretty list that will NOT let people mark things as bought (wishlistr.com)

Please help me, my google-fu is failing! Short of google docs or assigning someone as a wishlist registrar, I am not sure what to do.

Thank you, all!

Re: Non-store-affiliated Registry

  • Very close - do you know off-hand if Amazon will allow people to remove items without buying them through Amazon at that time? (It's a long shot, but I have eternal hope!)

Part of the reason we're doing this is that we have very few actual store-bought types of items for which we would like to register. We are doing a potluck reception and were hoping to use the registry site to help arrange that so that people could check off items and we wouldn't end up with 85 pies and no entrees. (Although if it happens, it happens.)

Thank you for responding so quickly!
  • Well, theoretically the list would help us end up with a spread of food. Potluck receptions are very common in our community, and it's a tradition we would like to continue; I had just hoped for a good way to facilitate it!
  • Not specifically, it happens to be a common reception type within both of our families, neither of which are based in MN.
  • I had gathered that. Thank you for your input, however!

Potlucks are generally not considered appropriate for wedding receptions, which is an event to thank your guests for witnessing your marriage.  Receptions should be hosted.  You can run into issues with food safety, and if not all your guests are local, the logistics are a giant pain for them.

It seems like you're already set on a potluck, though, so I will say that if it's what your family usually does, then you should keep track of who brings what however is normally done.  To me, using some kind of registry function to have guests sign up for dishes kind of sounds like it's just reducing your work while making it a less personal experience for your guests.  If the way that wedding potlucks are commonly done in your family is for guests to call the couple, say what they'd like to bring, and find out if that would be a good item, then that's what you should do.
  • So, YOU would be listing the food items and people would be choosing from your list what they'd like to bring? I'm not an advocate of potluck receptions, but if you are going to go this route, please let people choose for themselves what they'd like to bring. Furthermore, it shouldn't be mandatory to bring a dish to your wedding, so I feel like your method would make your guests feel obligated to bring something.

  • I don't agree with the potluck reception at all, but if you are going to do this anyhow, but you could create an Excel sheet in a Google doc format and send the link to the appropriate people.

Oooh that's a good idea! My friend did that for us to all add our Pottermore usernames to. It worked beautifully!

A Google Document would certainly be a good option if we cannot find a way to incorporate it onto a wedding website! Thank you both for your input!
  • I also don't agree with a potluck reception, but, my friends often use evite for such. There is an option for 'what you will bring.' Then you put 3 pies, 2 baked ziti's...and then your guests select how many of what items they'll bring. It works well for all the backyard bbq's my friend has.

Why can't you just put the link to your Google Doc on your website?
