Newbie with a question

I don't think I've ever posted on this board but I have a question for you ladies. We just got all of our church information for the wedding and a packet says this:
"The Diocese of -------- requires that both people entering marriage in the Catholic Church be 21 years of age. A special dispensation from the Bishop and a testimony of freedom to marry is required if either person is under 21 years of age."
I'm 19 so what exactly does a dispensation mean. I'm calling my church tomorrow but just curious if any of you have experience with this. TIA

It means that your diocese is really concerned that, because you are so young, you are entering marriage for all the right reasons and with proper discernment.

The dispensation from the bishop is paperwork. This will most likely be taken care of by your parish.

The affidavits of freedom to marry (we also had to complete these, just to ensure that we were eligible to be married in the church) will ask your family members to testify that you're not getting married because they are forcing you, or because you are pregnant or any other reason that truly feeling called to marry your FI. You will probably have to give similar testimony prior to the wedding.

Remember, the Church doesn't just love marriage. It loves good, holy marriages that last a lifetime and actually serve as a symbol of Christ's love for his Church. They have a vested interested in making sure you are as prepared as possible for marriage.

I would recommend talking to your priest or parish wedding coordinator. They should be able to answer any questions you have about what you need to do.
