Anyone have a reception without a DJ?

So we're thinking of ways to cut costs and I"ve read about people having a play list set up or CDs burned ahead of time and having a family member change them out on a sound system to avoid having a physical person there whose paid. I've gotten some quotes of $600+ For a DJ and that's a huge cost we could elminate but I'm wondering if anyone has been to wedding where this happened, or did it at theirs?? The location has a professional sound system so it wouldn't be just a boom box..

We aren't having a DJ.  The reception venue has a player piano with about 1000 songs on CD that we are going to use.

I have been to a wedding where they just had an iPod loaded with songs. It worked for the venue and atmosphere they were trying to create (it was a low key afternoon affair). They had a friend get on the microphone to announce when everything was going on for example the toasts, cutting of the cake, ect. There really was no dancing besides the first dances. But it worked out well.

We had an iPod wedding for our evening reception because we are music nerds and we wanted control.  We also didn't feel the need to pay someone to play music.

We rented the speakers from ICB audio and then used an iPod shuffle (this is the only iPod that allows you to set it to "DJ Fade" so one song flows into the next).  One of the groomsmen was our announcer.  We created a script with him ahead of time.  We also took song requests on our RSVP cards.  I worked pretty hard on the play list and we got a lot of compliments on it.

We're really happy that we did this.  It worked out wonderfully for us.
