Checks

My husband and I have received Checks written out to Mr and Mrs (his last name) however I'm not changing my last name how do we cash or deposit them?

Re: Checks

  • BofA had both me and my husband come in together.  I had to sign the back of the check in front of them then we deposited the check into DH back account.

  • I can sign the check even though the last name is his on it and not mine?
  • They may have to go into his account then.  Wells Fargo also required us both the be there since only one of us was on the account.

Ask your bank. Each has different policies. <div>

  • We deposited checks like this into our joint account without a problem as long as DH signed them.  We have a Capital One account, if that helps.

Definitely ask your bank.  BofA was pretty strict - we had to present our marriage license and both DH and I had to be present to sign the checks, which had to go into his account since I was in the process of switching my name and my only proof at the time was my new social security card, not a picture id.

  • We were able to deposit everything into our joint savings account (no joint checking) even though I didn't change my name.  I didn't have to be there.  I can't remember if I had to sign or not.
  • I haven't done this, but all these experiences about strict bank policies are counter to my experiences writing and receiving checks made out strangely.

I have no idea how unincorporated associations, like churches that don't apply for corporate status, open bank accounts, but they do. And I can make out those checks in various forms of the church's name, and they still get deposited. When I got worried about how lax this was with my old church, I put the corporation number on my checks for my new church. Only 3 people at the church know the number (though anyone in the world can look it up online). Again, checks deposited no problem.

My name gets mispelled on checks often. I can still deposit them. My mother has a nickname printed on her checks, and I assume receives checks made out in her nickname, again, no problems.

And with ATMs accepting checks for deposit, it'll take quite a bit to even catch that special procedures should have been followed.

    But trust those with experience.
  • I worked at a bank for a while and the policies/how they treat checks differ greatly not just from bank to bank but from employee to employee!

For the most part if you can prove your name and you are on the bank account you'll be able to deposit the check. Checks that look fradulent or have an incorrect DATE on them are more likely to run into issues (example, if you've put the date 3/1/13 but you meant to put 3/1/12 on the check, they are unable to deposit it because the date is in the future). If your bank knows who you are and you interact with them on a fairly regular basis you'll run into way fewer issues.

  • I'm not married yet but have received two checks like this. Navy federal wouldn't let us do anything with them. for the first one i had fiances sister go with him haha as weird as that is, technically they have the same last name even though shes a ms, not a mrs. the second time i deposited it into the atm. i've never had a check come back from an atm deposit.
